I recently posted a thread on how Earth can defend against an alien invasion. It has become evident that it should first be discussed what form an alien invasion would most likely take. It should probably be discussed also how an alien species would evolve in a relatively nearby solar system. A system close enough to move an invasion fleet from. How would they be diplomatically, would they be skilled fighters or perhaps out of practice due to the lack of civilizations to conquer. It should be assumed that this species though perhaps peaceful, are looking to expand their civilization to other planets and species.

If they simply wanted to kill us, they could simply rain giant asteroids on us and there probably wouldnt be much we could do to stop it.

But if they actually wanted to conquer us and still have a livable planet when it was all over, they would have to either put boots on the ground or use some sort of bio- weapon against us. Stargate had an episode in which aliens make first contact and offer us a vaccine for cancer. It works, but a side effect is permanent sterility and the earth is conquered without a shot being fired. (of course, the intrepid SG1 manages to send a message back in time to save our asses).

they are probably intending to land troops and conquer that way. We have never been able to use such tactics in our own wars.

    Huh?
    Landing troops to conquer?
    Overlord, for example...

Any alien civilization with a sizable fleet- big enough to take a planet- has to be at least 10,000 years more advanced than we are. This makes it a no contest for us humans.

As Dwyddyr wrote- the question is too fantastic to logically explore.

you really can't look at it that way and that is really not true. I could see us moving sizable fleets through space within 700 years. And just because they can move a fleet a few light years doesn't mean they are that advanced in all aspects. things don't all advance at the same pace, for example our computers have changed drastically almost every year for the last decade, but when was the last time there was an advancement in something that we don't see as important like say the organization of clothes, I know that is a rather lame example but perhaps these aliens have not had war for millenia and even before never saw it as the most important aspect of life and advancement. So far you all seem burdened with the idea that anything with the technology to move a few light years over the course of several years would be like gods to us. But what if they simply aren't as advanced as that. Open your mind to different possibilities of how civilization developes, I would certainly think it would be completely different than anything on Earth.

But I was hoping more for others ideas on how an alien civilization would grow and plan to expand to other already advanced civilizations on other planets.

With regard to an invasion, here's an (old) piece of writing done some 10-15 years ago by a friend of mine (yes we're geeky wargamers).

As you can see, the logistical problems of an invasion are quite large. (Which is possibly why Hollywood tends to skip over that part).

I didn't realize you were such an expert in alien technology- didn't know there even was one until now.

Harry Turtledove had an interesting take on that issue which he explored in two stories, one a short story and one an entire series. In the short story, the Road Not Taken, FTL and anti-gravity are ridiculously simple but somehow humanity never stumbled upon the secret.

Most races developed FTL and anti-gravity before developing science or even going thru the industrial revolution. They then begin traveling the stars bent on conquest with muskets and swords.

Anyway, when the aliens attempt to invade the earth, they are in for quite a surprise.

The other is his Worldwar series in which aliens invade the earth during WW2. The aliens travel via slower than light ships and, although more advanced than us, advance only very slowly and methodically. Thus when they arrive at earth a mere thousand years after a reconnaissance probe, they expect to face knights in armor and are shocked to see an industrial civilization in the midst of a world war. They are in for even worse shocks as humans continue to advance as the invasion proceeds.

I consider the Path Not Taken to be the most unique alien invasion story I've ever read.
