The whole point of a citation being important to one is the emotional, ethical, cognitive thrust it has for one.

Not rarely, a particular citation also has such an impact because one heard it in a situation that was important to oneself.

Imagine what effect it would have on you if you lost your job, had few prospects, went to the unemployment center, were rejected, and then read it written on the wall there:
"Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise."
After that, how would you view that saying?

    Or consider:
"You need to stop falling in love with losers."
"Stop pining after people who are way out of your league."
These are surely thoughts that some people have had and that were were important for them, so important that they became quotable.

    I can understand that
    "You're a fucking idiot."
could be an expression of the speaker's realization that some people are not worth associating with and that they should really be cut off from one's life, and also with the implied frustration that it took the speaker so long to realize this.
This is, for example, how I take it.

    tell me more
if i were the grand poobah of this site, i would have no choice but to allow any quote to stand due to the aforementioned technical issues

i think to read b/w the lines in this case is intrusive and wholly unwarranted.
it is like a mind rape

    again
the brackets and ascription indicate a quote of a statement that occurred sometime in the past by gustav

yet the 7 insult voters, using purely circumstantial evidence, infer from the quote, that i had insulted Nobody in real time.

a real life judge would have thrown the case out. do you disagree?

Although it's true, Gustav has probably called people f*cking idiots on many occasions...that hardly counts as a quotable Gustav moment...it's like highlighting that the sun rose in the east. It's just the way the world works...the sun rose in the east yesterday, Gustav called someone a f*cking idiot yesterday...when I was a very n00bish n00b here I took his snarling a lot more seriously, of course, but then I figured out he does it impartially at everyone. He does have interesting things to say amidst the vitriol.

I mean, if Gustav had instead said "Gee, I really wish Nobody would put more thought and research into his posts when he launches threads," now THAT would have shocked the $hit out of all of us, I think.

Personally, I wish Nobody would put more thought and research into his posts when he launches threads.

Is everyone familiar with Patricia Evans' "The verbally abusive relationship"?

She lists there ten traps that keep people stuck in abusive relationships:

Based on my experience, I also think it works the other way around: that behaving in line with the above-mentioned behaviors leads to an abusive relationship.
So it would be prudent to avoid those behaviors.

Specifically pertinent for this kind of threads is the first trap:

    1. The Explaining Trap - "If I could only explain more clearly, the abuser would stop abusing me. If only I would get my argument across clearly, things would be fine. If only they would see my point, they would stop with their irrational, hurtful, unfair behavior. If only they could see that I am a good, rational person, they would grant me my wishes."

Explaining and seeking explanation have their uses, but they are limited.
It is easy to overuse explaining and seeking explanation.

Once a trend has been established that someone questions the behavior of others, it creates a stigma on the person that is very difficult to reverse and it produces much prejudice and unfairness toward said person.

Perhaps it might be suitable to address the topics of social justice, fairness and related by starting a series of threads in General Philosophy, Human Science and in Ethics, Morality and Justice.

This way, the need to address those topics can be satisfied - for they are important topics -, while at the same time people aren't uncomfortably exposed and expected to introspect publicly on domestic forum matters such as in some SFOG threads.

    It is quoted an insult.
    This is certainly a quote.
It is also an insult? Gustav only knows!

You can't get away with breaching site rules by quoting yourself - or somebody else for that matter. It's the intent that counts. If the intent is to insult, then we'll do you for insulting other members. Or, if intent is questionable, then we will judge on the overall effect of your post. In particular, if somebody reports your post as being insulting (especially the recipient of said post) then we'll assume the person regarded it as an insult.

So if he were to say

    "Nobody is a fucking idiot"

would that still constitute an insult?

In this particular instance, considering the poster's username is Nobody...I personally would think so.

Actually...I think it would be rather difficult to not find an instance in which any sentence that ends with ".... a f*cking idiot" would not be insulting to someone...But I guess we can insult non-members all we like, just not each other, right?
So I could say " I think Donald Rumsfeld is a f*cking idiot," and I'm good. But if I said that about any poster-that would not be cool. So glad Rummy doesn't come here...

Actually, Gus could have gotten away with being just as insulting by quoting someone else:

I am sure I've heard the quote before. I think I said it first in year 2006 while shaving.

Then again, it could be an honest mistake. When I was a toddler, one night in the bed I realized that I was lying on my side rather than, as I usually did, on my back or on my face. I immediately assumed that I invented lying on one's side.
