In passing, I saw a small portion of the recent John Adams series. There is a scene where John Adams talks to his son, who was in his early twenties at the time, preparing to become a lawyer and romantically involved with a young woman whom he sought to marry.
His father, John Adams, instructed him to immediately break off the engagement, focus on his work, and told him "You are too young and too unestablished to be able to afford a romantic relationship."

Such advice is unthinkable nowadays, seemingly irrationally restrictive, but I think it makes good sense.

I think part of the phenomenon you describe has to do with how romantic relationships between the sexes are evaluated quite differently nowadays than in history.

Romantic relationships have been downright deified, presented as the one and only true source of happiness. I think such ideas of romantic love are a part of what drives the lowly behavior of so many women today.

Many women desperately want it (note the idea that a woman's wedding day is "the happiest day in her life" - then what about the rest of the marriage?) and will go to extremes to attract a man.

(Anthony Storr in "Solitude: A return to the self" makes a quite convicing argument against this deification of romantic love.)

You either skipped over or grew out of the usual romantic conditioning.

Yeah. Well, between Tempus Fugit and your twitchy fingers, who has time?

    Anyway.
Skipping back past all the dross... Back to the ancient days of the opening post... Forget about rape... No one mentioned rape... You are getting sleepy...

    Alright.
I think that the observation expressed in the opening post has merit although it's definitely being expressed far too absolutely.

The proposition that women dress and behave as they do being for the sake of their fellow women rather than men is undeniable. Like to like. Women are wired to appreciate things which men are completely incapable of seeing. Men are wired the same way.

That's the "delicious irony" in the whole mess. Women (and men) bend over backwards trying to attract the opposite sex but their weapons are tailored for themselves and their own kind rather than their intended targets.

What's that old Anais Nin golden oldie?
    You know the one.

See, I doubt that most of these women actively think about impressing other women. The target in their sights is most likely a man. But, they can't help but aim at themselves.

    Blind fools we humans are.

Of course, I don't doubt that there is some direct and overt posturing for the females as well. After all, who are most likely to actually make useful "comments" about any particular getup? Costume or otherwise? A man or a woman?

Man: You're hot. (Rubbing groin on butt.)
Woman: Wow. Your eye shadow would look way better if you used a lighter shade and maybe if you drew the corners of your eyes more uplifting so as to raise your whole face. Plus some blush to heighten your cheekbones... blah blah blah.

    You get the point.

So, I think that we all dress and act to fit many different audiences at the same time. But, we all can't help but ascribe the most importance to our own opinion, and thus to those who share our perspective. Sometimes the same gender. Sometimes the same occupation. Etc...

I think that society is composed of men and women and the idea of "patriarchy" is moot. There have always been strong men and strong women. Weak men and weak women. Pairings of one with the other and all sorts in between.

Where the idea of a patriarchy does hold sway is simply in terms of... "head of household" I suppose you could say.

    Put it this way.
Even in the days of man's ascendancy, it would be ostensibly the father who is in charge of the dealings. Making decisions for his family. Business and otherwise. Man's in charge, God's in Heaven, and all is right with the world.
But, the key word in the above paragraph is "ostensibly."

Women have always had a say in some households. Never had a say in others. Sometimes have a say in others.
    And vice versa.
In other words, a mish mash that averages out.

So, any social engineering that goes on also averages out.

Also, "man" didn't social engineer anything. Neither did "woman." Rather, blind selection did.
We're a consequence of a system that is far to complex to be reined in by any one person or even an entire gender.

They may try, but the consequences ripple out chaotically.

However, and here's the key, this is what modern marketing taps into.
Social research and psychological profiles which demonstrate easy ways of tapping into vast veins of selective potential hiding just beneath the surface of the human psyche. They take a little knowledge and, very irresponsibly, use this to manipulate us into buying their brand, thereby "shaping" our culture.
Social engineering by a gluttonous pig. Men and women. Or, rather, neither.
    Business... people.
    Merchants.

Sex sells, baby. And thus... we need more of it.

A couple of things come to mind here.

    1. Fishing for compliments. Women (and men) are constantly insecure about various parts of their anatomy, and what better way to get temporary relief from that insecurity than first giving it to someone else?
    Tit for tat.

    2. These costumes are precarious and require constant maintenance. I can't believe how uncomfortable it is not being able to touch your nose because you'll smudge your goddamned makeup.

And here. A few things spring to mind.

    1. A form of vicarious sexuality.
A lot of those girls have been spoon fed on images of brazen sluts humping their dark skinned gods to this music (another primal tap, by the way) that's pounding in their ears and they want to follow their teaching. But, they're shy, insecure, and frankly not really wanting to face the consequences (not drunk enough yet.)
So, it's safe to go perform these deeds on women. The consequences don't have the same weight.

Also, most of these girls practice all these moves on women. So they're most comfortable re-enacting that in clubs.

Add to this that men really can't dance and just start doing the "mad hump" at first opportunity and you can see why they may like to dance with women for cosmetic reasons.

    2. There's a lot of predators lurking in the crowd. Those stone-faced wolves who simply want to grab and hump. Grab and hump. I know you've seen women surrounded by a group of "lone" wolves and humped into submission (i.e. running for the safety of the bathroom or a wall against which to place their ass.)

What's really funny about these guys is that they don't even seem to enjoy their fruit. I suppose it's because that's not what they want. All this (ick) dancing is only a means to an end. Getting some weak girl home with her legs spread (and I'm not talking about rape, ladies, so put your tongues away (not that many of you have made it this far, I'd guess.))

    Interesting.
    Contradictory nonsense.
    Doublethink.

This is what I think of as a dysfunctional household where nobody wants to talk about so and so's drinking problem. They enable each other. Don't talk about my ailment and I won't talk about yours. Then it'll be like we're perfectly healthy.

The ridiculous thing about women in men's jobs is that sometimes they simply are unable to physically perform the same job as the man and yet they demand, with a straight face, the same benefits as the man.

Some jobs can be performed by both sexes.
Some jobs are preferentially performed by one or the other.
Life is what it is and idiots who take logical abstractions (such as all people should be treated equally) to heights of ridiculousness are... well... ridiculous.
    Sad, really.

Open your eyes and look at the world.

    Observe your surroundings.

    Isn't that what science is?

Funny how so many people on a science site look at the world with eyes closed.

    Eerie fog is right.

    The insanity is simple irresponsibility.
Conflicting messages from groups with no more interest than selling their point of view. They look at only the small and not the large.
Tapping into forces that they don't understand and can't control for a larger share of the market.

Leaving behind a generation of cripples.

    The politically correct.

    Dysfunctional.

The irony is that learning more about these effects simply enables the irresponsible to become more irresponsible.

    Damned if we do.
    Damned if we don't.

Well, it's shortly after that the thread descended into rape fantasy.
There are a few more relevant points in the thread, I'll try to get back to them when Tempus is less Fugit.

One more thing before I go.

An object lesson in the differences between men and women but also a lesson in how women really do know what men want and highlights that they're not really dressing for them at all.

The "Sexiest Woman Contest", I understand, was won by a pretty much naked girl.

Everybody knew she'd win the instant she stepped on stage.

    Men.
    And women.

Nope. But cops and the courts do - which is why someone who steals something from your house will go to jail even if your door was unlocked.

I don't much care about them, no. There are a whole lot of other things in my life that I care about far more than I care about criminals.

To explain the comment I made earlier:
I originally liked your ability to skewer people in their vulnerable spots, and to do it supremely well...but you crossed a line with me when you went here:

I think this one little comment...allowed me to see the fact that you are not doing as you do out of a rather mean-spirited sense of fun, but give off indications of having serious empathic deficit.
Sociopathic types are not good for me to interact with, as I truly don't understand them. I'm fairly far from being a sociopath.

I tend to slot people into two categories when I judge people:
    Threat and not threat.
If someone is not a threat I really don't judge what they do.
A girl with her a$$ hanging out is not a threat.
If someone is a threat, I think "How much?" "Do I need to attack them first?"
"Should I try to kill them?"
    And stuff like that.

Being verbally/text abused is just a drag...and not what I'm on the internet for. So I'm leaving you alone from here on out.

You were never on me to leave me.

Hence the idiocy of someone in here claiming all of you "women"-- you being one of them-- were all over me vying for my attention.

    I don't even know you.

And how do you know Gendanken wasn't dribbling her guts into a toilet for being called a 'whore'?
Slitting her wrists over being label a "bitch cheerleader"?
Pulling her hair over being reminded to, quote, wax my pudenda in case some woman in here decided to eat it?

How do you know I wasn't reared by a passive aggressive cunt who made my life miserable by mocking, pulling, pushing, tugging, pricking at me with her taunting?

So its only people like you deserving of, shall we say, "pity"?

    Alright.
    I'll bite.
If I take the above as a stated fact, that you were raised in an environment of extreme emotional abuse, I would say this:

I was raised by an a$$hole.
If you hated it, why do you then emulate it?
Are you saying the only way you know how to engage people is by attacking them?

Too, if you aren't prepared to take it, then I would suggest you not dish it out.

Advice, like the common cold, is the only thing people are willing to give away 'cause its free.

I disagree its "unthinkable"; all people think about is how to advice other people.
So what exactly does limited-edition Missioni garbage at Target, which crashed their website, do for Romance?

What does a survey on "The Most Outrageous Thing You Would Do for Some Cold Hard Cash?" and a personal blog by some kitchen wench and her boyfriend discussing their sexual lives in the most lascivious detail have to do with Romance?

What does buying pink garbage for Breast Cancer do for motherfucking Romance?

And its not just women writing this shit-- they'll even pretend it's men writing these articles as well so that you, sitting alone Friday nights with the crusty panties your grandmother gave you for Christmas, can feel inadequate enough to buy prettier ones.

Isn't capitalism, as we know it, Mussolini's deliverance?

Its the most perfect, finely tuned, no purchase necessary, limited-edition, good while supplies last, batteries not included, some-assembly-required and allow six weeks for delivery alloy of Bullshit, Business, and Politics. That is to say, Fascism.

Why? Because no one knows better how to exploit a human being's weaknesses and sell them the cure than women.

    I certainly don't think so.

The "liberated woman" is the promiscuous whore Charles II was and considers being the best fellatrix more important than algebra.

Wedding Days have always been the fagottry they are today.

    No?

Flip through any page of Austen's and you'll find the Bennet girls desperately seeking husbands. Eons before that it was Salome and before that some girl in Catalhoyouk nurturing her hymen for Rufus.

Typical asshole: uneducated hic named Danny; he's got a spit cup for his chewed up tobacco and old parking tickets.

Do I sound like him? For that matter, Munchhausen's by Proxy mothers are just as idiotic lacking even the aegis to punctuate sentences.

    Is that so.

Is your only way to engage people by reading a few posts and presuming you
"know" them? Then you're no different than those you malign for thinking a girl in a thong should be assfucked.

I've been here for years, toots.

Oh, I may well be wrong. If you'll notice I did a lot of qualifying. I never can judge people accurately until I have seen them move, talked to them face-to-face and looked in their eyes.

But the fact, freely acknowledged, that I can't assess you accurately does not change the fact that I find you not enjoyable, but disturbing.

You know, the same piece of string between you and the urinal.

    Know what's funny?

You are what my mother's generation would vie tooth and nail for-- all the primping and fussing and bitching and punching and scheming just so that a drunken prole could ask her out to the Sizzler again and puke on her shoes.

In some ways, I'm rather grateful its women running the show now so that I could forgo having to please you in exchange for a little bulimia.

    And lots of pink garbage.
