The theory goes that proteins digest slower than carbohydrates with the result that the carbohydrates can ferment when being held up by the protein food. And that this causes the CO2 gas we belch or that passes clear through the intestinal tract.

    Any thoughts on this subject?

I thing there is a longer time delay between belch and fart, during digestion

That was your joke. Actually, the issue is of importance to people who have some digestive problems, including myself. Then, its not so funny.

Another variable is saliva. If I am not mistaken the enzymes in saliva help to break down the carbohydrates before they enter the stomach and while in the stomach. Conceivably, if you eat too fast and/or there is not enough saliva mixed with the carbs, the carbs might grid down in alternate ways. The protein hold up might increase this problem.
