    So i have this phrase...

"when you have no ruler in an exam, your exam card is actually good for something!"

obviously implying that the exam card can be used as a ruler.
Now how do a phrase that in a way that makes it sound funny?
    Can anyone do this?

How does making it "sound funny" equate with making it "sound better" ?

Better: Should you have no ruler, even your exam card may be used as a straightedge.
Funny: When one takes an exam and is having the exam card and no ruler, the card itself can be used for the betterment of the straight lines.

Lacking a straight edge, I have utilized the exam card itself to define the straight and narrow requirements of this exercise.

hmmm... I dunno, maybe that one was too hard to make funny.

What about a simple statement like 'I have a statistic exam tomorrow. I hate statistics.' How can that be made funny?

With 97% confidence the ARIMA model (fitted from a sample of 500 12-dimensional data points) predicts an exam in statistics tomorrow. I hate statistics.

The exam card, while originally designed as drooler, you will find not damn hard, will conveniently be as ruler.

I can’t make the phrase funny but I can turn it into a dumb joke.

Why was that straight edged nerd holding his exam card on his forehead?

Because the teacher said for all of the straightedges, if you forgot your ruler just use your exam card, and he wanted to measure his intelligence.

Your exam card becomes useful when you have no ruler in an exam

"If you forgot the ruler the exam card is at least good for something!".

Coupled with a smile it should make someone laugh. Perhaps you have to laugh after you said it to make it obvious that it is a joke, or make a

    smiley if it's written.

I would skip the "in an exam" part, the less you have to explain the premise, the better is the joke and the premise isn't needed.

That said; I didn't think the original phrase was that bad anyway.
