I usually listen to techno and dubstep and apart from an occassional Armin masterpiece, music rarely touches me - its more like it fills in the background while I read or travel or relax. My heart turned into a mushy pulp and I melted into a swirl of intense emotions, memories and the like. This is a rare occasion for me and I would be very greatful if you guys can suggest similiar songs, both is style and generally expected emotional response. To my knowledge, Schez and Fraggle a both into proper music and other that I am not very familiar with might be too. Any suggestions are welcome. Ps. Sorry for not being on this site for some time. I see that current topics now include theism as it relates to evolution and creationism, perhaps reflecting current cultural conditions. This does give me the happy opportunity to indulge in my two favourite fields of discourse on this site - religion and biology. I find my knowledge base to have expanded and my literary style to have developed and become more refined, which is, of course, a good thing. Arent americans or canadians or australians english too? After all, most of them do have english as their first language. While britian is the source of english, considering current social topologies, wouldnt 'british' be a better adjective? I think that Ofra Haza does a great rendition of Led Zeppelin's “Kashmir,” which was written by Jimmy Page, John Bonham, and Robert Plant. Actually it would make more sense to ask, "Why are English people called 'British'?" The English people are not British. The Britons were a Celtic people who lived on the southern portion of the island which the Romans named Britannia. The Greeks called it Albion, which is probably a form of the original inhabitants' name, which might have meant either "white" or "mountain." The people on the north half of the island were the Picts, and we know nothing about them since they are extinct. That land was taken over by Irish explorers whose descendants now call themselves Scots. When the Roman Empire collapsed and the legionnaires went home, they left behind an outpost of Iron Age civilization where there had once been only Bronze Age farming villages. This was a great temptation to the Germanic tribes, who set out in boats to take over the now-ungoverned and undefended pastoral lands of Britannia. Many Germanic tribes participated in this conquest and occupation, but two whose names have been preserved in history were the Angles and the Saxons. (There is still a region in Germany named Saxony.) They marginalized the original Celtic people, either intermarrying with them and turning them into Germanic folk, or driving them out--there is a corner of the French seacoast named Brittany, where some of the Britons took refuge after a sea voyage, and the Celtic Breton language is still spoken there. The rest of southern Britannia, except for Wales and Cornwall, became the territory of the Angles and Saxons--and the other Germanic tribes whose names are ignored or even forgotten. They began naming the regions, and many of the counties in modern England have names like East Anglia and Wessex (i.e. West Saxony). The entire country became known as Angle Land. (The Welsh people still speak their Celtic language and the Cornish people also have one, although it is falling into disuse.) The Germanic invaders spoke a variety of Germanic dialects that were more or less mutually intelligible, and these coalesced into a single dialect of Old High German which they called Anglisc, using the -isc suffix to turn a noun into an adjective--it's the old form of our current suffix -ish. Today we call this ancient tongue Anglo-Saxon, but until quite recently people simply called it Old English. The Anglo-Saxons were overrun by the Norman French in 1066 and yatta yatta a whole bunch of important history occurred, but despite a strong infusion of French blood, the people who live on the southern part of Britannia are still the descendants of the Germanic conquerors and they still call themselves and their language "English," which is just "Anglisc" with some phonetic evolution. Nonetheless, throughout all of these events, the island itself kept the name Britannia. So as the population of the island became a bit of a melting pot with all that French blood (not to mention the Norsemen who also landed there), people lost track of their original Germanic ancestry and just named them after their island, stealing the name of the Celtic people they banished: the Britons. This is not uncommon. Egypt was overrun by the Arabs many centuries ago so its people are primarily of Arabic descent rather than progeny of the Pharaohs, but they still call themselves Egyptians. We very seldom name people after their language. After all, if we did, the Mexicans, Cubans, Guatemaltecas, etc. would be Spaniards, the Haitians would be French, and the Brazilians would be Portuguese. Ethnonyms are usually derived from place-names. So the people who live in America, Canada and Australia are named after those places. That depends on how far back you go. The Anglo-Saxons came from Germany. And today several offical dialects of English are recognized: British English, American English, Australian/New Zealand English, South African English, Indian English and of course African-American Vernacular English or "AAVE." Since most of the speech and writing in the English language is now produced by Americans, perhaps we should rename it "American."
