    Yes, we observe the events that occur when such photons strike particles in our atmosphere (or even further away, as in interstellar hydrogen.)

    Virtual photons don't "emanate." They are a mathematical construct; they aren't real. They are like those positive charge carriers that beginning physics books show - you know, the particles that are shown flowing from the + side of the battery to the - side of the battery. They don't really exist. It's just an easy way to visualize what is actually going on, which is that negative particles are flowing the other way. From a math perspective - times - equals + so it all works out.

    Yours: "such photons"? . . . . which photons are you talking about? I have no issues with 'detectible photons' interacting with massive particles, as you describe.

    Yours: "They are a mathematical construct; they aren't real"? . . . . . . So are virtual particles . . . so, I'd guess, Feynman's diagrams are actually mathematical "cartoons" that don't represent reality.
