This coming from a former military man? You swore a OATH a PLEDGE to our country. To protect our country both foreign and domestic amongst other things.
And yet you question why we need a pledge.
It is my opinion and in my view that a pledge is to show basically where it is you stand. It is also a show of loyalty.
And Pledge of Allegiance, is an oath of loyalty to the United States. I am loyal IMO to my country. And I don't wish to live somewhere else other than USA.
And since we are talking about PLEDGE. Here is a site for definition. http://en.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/pledge

But I am curios because I am unable to refine my search enough. When did we start the switch to hold the hand over the heart? Any one know? Because it was mentioned earlier it was a nazi salute.

I refused to say the pledge from 6th grade on. But they still wanted me to stand, which mostly I did. What was even stranger is singing morning songs like "Dixie" and "Oh Suzanna", both minstrel songs.

I question as to why very young children who don't even understand the oath they are taking are told they must do so. I wonder how many people go around doing as they are told just because of things like this pledge. I ask why pledge if you aren't capable of understanding what it is that you are doing.

The pledge itself, as I already expressed, can be lied about when saying it so no matter what you pledge it is the deeds of the people who are asked to do things for their countries as to the deeds they perform showing thier loyality. I never understood, at 4 years old in kindergarten as to what it was I was actually saying. Why say things that you don't understand or is it just to make you obey orders from your earliest childhood days?

I put forth this question, why should an oath be needed when the loyality should already be given seeing that you are born in a country and raised there to what that country represents.

. . . who left their home country and traveled across the seas to escape the tyranny of a state religion.

Ah, so New York could require you be Jewish (under pain of prison) and Tennessee could require you to be Baptist? Maybe Oregon could go to the Muslims.

I could do without it in general.

Not true. Jefferson was a deist, and anyway it doesn't matter if they were believers or not, we aren't ruled by their memory, but by the document they produced.

Besides, Jesus said, "Take no oaths, let your yes mean yes, and your no mean no.".

I showed my loyality to America by volunteering for the military when I turned 18 so that was my deed to express myself to show where I stood when others waited for their draft number to be called . There are many ways in which to show your loyality to whichever country you might belong to but it should be your own decision to do so not someone telling you that you must do as your told.

It's comforting to know that (former?) members of the armed forces are working to make the U.S. a theocratic dictatorship.

Considering that 20 states (so far, anyway) have presented petitions for independence and creating their own governments in the week or so since Barak Obama's re-election, what happens to the pledge of allegiance in those states? I guess you pledge allegiance to the state government instead of the Federal Government...

The POA is a constant "reminder" to all citizens re: unified loyalty to the USA (via the flag 'and the Republic for which it stands') . . . likewise similar POAs in most every other country for the same reasons.
