Think of it what you will - I do personally believe in "death with dignity", though I may not agree with it; however, as I said - giving someone the right to end their life in the face of painful, terminal, and incurable disease is vastly different from telling a depressed person to go play in traffic

In talking about another member of the site? Yeah, I'm not in favor of that kind of talk. But only because it would be impossible to make such judgments based on someone's post. But talking about other people in general? I mean, are we supposed to say Hitler wasn't evil? Or Stalin?

Everyone judges. It's human nature. You do it, too. In fact, you just did it by calling those who point fingers "self-righteously smug"

I recall JamesR talking briefly several months ago about his vision for Sciforums, and how implementing it was nearing its end, or something. He also mentioned how they (the admin, I suppose) only tolerated certain individuals for color or something, like clowns—not his exact words, of course. So, to attain those goals without drawing too much suspicion from either the general board or... Plazma Inferno?

I think Gustav was being sarcastic there, but apparently too sarcastic for the mainstream tastes of this forum.

Some people believe they should be free to judge and condemn, but that nobody should judge and condemn them.

The first one to throw the low punch is the one who is right, eh?

And if the op is the one to be the first to throw the low punch - well, that makes things very clear, doesn't it.

Who was where "telling a depressed person to go play in traffic"?

How can you be justifiably permabanned while on a ban?
That is being punished twice for the same crime.

You quite literally do - and that is true of every single private forum out there. If you like their style, then stick around and post. If you don't, there are plenty of other forums out there who would be happy to have you. Your choice.

    Hi Kittamaru.

I am responding because you have addressed my post; for which, thanks.

What was stopping you before? Nothing. Which is why the mod-troll abuses occurred in the subtle (and sometimes not-so-subtle) pattern which my Mars Rover experiment highlighted.

What is stopping you now? I humbly suggest that the recent constructive efforts by some (to tackle the problem in open forum instead of behind closed doors where the victim/impressions can be framed and skewed to suit the double-standards and character assassination tactics of the mod-troll combos) may have some little effect on the erstwhile arrogance and sense of impunity which was displayed in the past but which cannot any longer be sustained so patently now that all this is out in the open forum for all to scrutinize properly and not just accept the 'mod-troll' version of the 'edited facts' of the matter.

And the very fact that you as a mod even have to entertain such 'rationalizations' (like some I have seen here and elsewhere: "We could have if we wanted to"; or "It could have been worse so just thank us for small mercies and shut up"; or "If you don't like the way we mod-troll then leave!" etc etc) tells me that the mod culture is not as healthy and objective and fair minded/humane as it should be on a science site. I trust you get my drift there as a general observation of mod-troll combo 'culture' and nothing personal towards you in any way?

That's all I have time to say on that, mate. Thanks for your responses and (and I trust) best efforts. At least the problems are being finally discussed in open forum as they should have been all along in order to avoid all the loss of trust from both sides.

Cheers and good luck and good thinking to you and everyone! And please bear in mind always when considering my posts on this so far: No hard feelings or personal agendas involved at my end.

    Take care!

Not much time, so briefly, mate....

I would have thought that the over-riding modus-operandi for real Science related open discourse should revolve around consideration of ideas old and new, not around considerations of 'style' of mod-troll combos in power in any one 'milieu'.

Perhaps this site wants to join the uncounted 'twittering class' of sites which are mere 'blogs' and malicious 'social back-stabbing' arenas of sadistic entertainment for the trolling masses?

I hope and trust not; for that way lay irrelevance to responsible humanity and betrayal of the idea of open science discourse which is purportedly the raison detre of such a site as this.

Bye for now. Take care, mate, everyone!

How does anyone know that Gustav himself wasn't a suicide risk? You said yourself that he probably needed psychiatric help. What if these recent actions against him, including an infraction for a simple joke, a ban for questioning the infraction which led to his outburst suggesting suicide of people he sees as evil, wasn't what it would take to push him over the edge to suicide, or worse, homicide. How much responsibility are you ready to accept?

I'm guessing they decided the 1 week ban wasn't enough. They had to justify Gustav's permaban by giving Neverfly a permaban as well. They gotta maintain an illusion of fair play. but in both of their cases they were baited into their outbursts. Both should have controlled themselves but in both cases the mods were certainly culpable for their mod/troll tactics as RC keeps pointing out.

Heh... it's funny that you bring that up, as I pondered that myself before issuing the ban. While I can never be 100% sure, I feel fairly safe in saying that he was not a suicide risk. As for how much responsibility I would accept... if it turns out he committed suicide because of my actions, I would of course feel somewhat responsible... but again, if these forums are the only thing tethering him to reality, then there is a much, much larger issue that needs addressed. Issues that require professional help that I am not trained or capable of treating.

But it has been suggested that members here have to be responsible for their words if they bully someone to suicide. And you (used collectively to describe the mods) ban people you consider bullies that may push someone over the edge. Even though the mods themselves bully the members. You don't see the hypocrisy there?

And you didn't address the possibility that you may have pushed him over the edge to committing homicide. What if he hurt someone else? What if he hunted down the mods and took them out?

I am not saying that bullies deserve to be murdered, but our society supports it in some levels. Terrorists are bullies and our government hunts them down and kills them. There have been public cries for the cyber bullies who pushed a little girl to suicide to be dragged out and beaten to death. Isn't it reasonable to worry that if you bully members here, and yes mods here are bullies, that eventually you are going to do it to one that would wish harm on you and maybe even follow through? Wouldn't it be easier to cut down on the threats of violence by simply not behaving in a way that makes you unlikable?

The mods don't treat the members like free thinking adults. They treat them like monkeys to be beaten into submission. Its like the planet of the apes here. And if any human speaks they get lobotomized. If they dare fight back they will be removed from existence, digitally speaking. We are to keep our collars on and keep our mouths shut. Only treading where master tells us to and acting as master tells us to.

Hey, Seagypsy, as one moderator told me, after giving me an unjustified red infraction and a week-long ban:

You need to grow a thicker skin.

Do you remember where he was discussing this. Because it was mentioned to me by another member. And seems to repeat suspicions I have heard voiced by other members that a lot of what is happening is going on behind Plasma Inferno's back. And that James R is actually attempting to take over. Maybe we all need to start PMing Plasma until he shows his face around here and makes a stand for one side of the situation or the other.

yeah but they don't need thick skin. I was accused of attacking bells which i didn't do, just because I pointed out how her personal problems weren't valid evidence for her claims. but she could say the same thing about my personal experiences and that wasn't attacking. but her feelings were apparently getting hurt. Apparently only members need thick skins, mods can cry abuse all they want.

The thing is, if all of us that they don't like. All us "trouble makers" as they like to call us leave this site. it will go boring as hell. No one will bother coming here and their hits will drop like rocks. Then their advertisers will go elsewhere. Look at that abortion and personhood thread. The original thread had over 7500 views and over 500 replies. that's quite a bit of traffic for the short time it was open. So Tiassa recreates the thread with conditions that certain people not participate. And he got only 2 members and one mod that contributed to the new thread. Both members disagreed with him and the mod that piped in didn't even make a coherent post. and the thread is dead on page 1 with less than 200 views so far. That is the future of this forum if they ban all of us "colorful" posters.

Readers want discussion, even if it is heated. They do not want some editorialist telling them what to think.

James R is actually Jesus Christ and Plazma is God.

James has been preparing this forum for the second coming. So you best gird your loins as he will be 'commin fer yer wimmin folk'..

Which makes my conspiracy theory is as valid as yours is.

In short, that would have to be one of the most absurd conspiracy theories posted about this site.

How do people come up with these things? No, really.. How?

You are aware that all the staff are in constant contact with each other and with the admin and this site's owners, yes? No?

We have a private forum where we are constantly chatting to each other about a variety of issues that arise on this site and with its members..

Me thinks you think too highly of yourself.

This site existed for many many years before you joined.

As much as you want to label yourself as a "trouble maker", at present you are only providing most of us with amusement. This latest conspiracy theory will have us chuckling for a while..

The only condition was that people understand the terminology and not drag the other flames and idiocy from the previous thread. I understand how that may have thrown you a bit...

Yes, readers want discussions. What that does not entail is people rubbing two stones together and acting like cavemen because they do not actually understand what is being discussed and instead drag it off-topic.

Your comment about wanting discussions, even heated ones, is intriguing. If people want discussions and heated one's at that, it may behoove them to not report every second post and even take to going back almost a year, before one even became a member of this site, to find posts to report...

Because that kind of behaviour tells us that a) such individuals have way wayyyy too much time on their hands and b) they have their own agenda they are trying to push on this site or c) they have no life outside of this site.
