WASHINGTON—"In an announcement that could forever change the way scientists study the hydrogen-based star, NASA researchers published a comprehensive study today theorizing that the sun may be capable of supporting fire-based lifeforms. “After extensive research, we have reason to believe that the sun may be habitable for fire-based life, including primitive single-flame microbes and more complex ember-like organisms capable of thriving under all manner of burning conditions,” lead investigator Dr. Steven T. Aukerman wrote, noting that the sun’s helium-rich surface of highly charged particles provides the perfect food source for fire-based lifeforms. “With a surface temperature of 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit and frequent eruptions of ionized gases flowing along strong magnetic fields, the sun is the first star we’ve seen with the right conditions to support fire organisms, and we believe there is evidence to support the theory that fire-bacteria, fire-insects, and even tiny fire-fish were once perhaps populous on the sun’s surface.” Scientists cautioned that despite the exciting possibilities of fire-life on the star, there are numerous logistical, moral, and ethical questions to resolve before scientists could even begin to entertain the possibility of putting fire-people on the sun."----http://www.theonion.com/articles/scientists-theorize-sun-could-support-firebased-li,34559/

We come across things like this every now and then - pieces of "research" that are so patently stupid as to be completely absurd. (shrug) These guys are after research money, nothing more.

I get all of my news stories from the Onion.

It's so much more reliable and trustworthy than other news websites, like that "Fox" one, for example.

This is a test of how gullible people are, so they can tweak the presentation of future political propaganda. If you think of it logically, they can't even form life from scratch with all the materials right here on earth, but they can extrapolate from the sun. It would be interesting to see which political party is easier to dupe to know which propaganda machine is sending out test balloons.

Heh heh. Speaking of test, that reminds me to set up my wellwisher balloon-o-meter next to my wellwisher baloney-meter. Y'know, balloon/baloney, tomato/tomahto, that sort of thing. And lest we forget the Onion . . .

Number 9 Bus Shelter, so...you have not perused much of the "www - world wide wasteland"?

Actually, the OP is a fairly mild example of the numerous "copy/pasted" OP's by the legendary Magical Realist.

The Onion plainly and honestly markets itself as pure satire. They don't expect anyone to take the stuff seriously, it's just entertainment!

It also has a non-satirical section reviewing movies, restaurants, etc.

The Immortal Molecule: Scripps Research Scientists Develop First Examples of RNA that Replicates Itself Indefinitely Without Any Help from Biology
Findings Could Inform Biochemical Questions about How Life Began

LA JOLLA, CA, January 8, 2009—One of the most enduring questions is how life could have begun on Earth. Molecules that can make copies of themselves are thought to be crucial to understanding this process as they provide the basis for heritability, a critical characteristic of living systems. Now, a pair of Scripps Research Institute scientists has taken a significant step toward answering that question. The scientists have synthesized for the first time RNA enzymes that can replicate themselves without the help of any proteins or other cellular components, and the process proceeds indefinitely.

By far conservatives would be easier to dupe. Reasons:

    1) Historically they believe more untrue things, driven primarily by their sources - FOX News, conservative talk radio. This primes them to accept obviously untrue propaganda, since they often have to eschew critical thinking to accept the propaganda they are already fed.

    2) They are often indoctrinated by the religious right to reject science and math and instead believe in more magical explanations (creationism, denial of evolution etc)

    3) They are also indoctrinated to look down on educated people. The term "ivory tower intellectual" is often used as an insult among conservative circles, implying that educated people are out of touch with reality.

    4) They often must believe untrue things (i.e. climate change denialism) because their party demands it.

Thus living in a world that is based largely on rejection of science, math and education makes some conservatives far more likely to believe untrue propaganda.

(BTW the original post was a joke.)
