Don't make me laugh. Unless of course you are trying to say the somehow having a pilots licence to travel in the air gives him or anyone superior knowledge on the UFO phenomenon. Quite the opposite, there are very few who attend sciforums who has seriously studied the subject. Those who think they have, often are delusional about having a superior knowledge about the ''night sky.'' If you had any knowledge about exobiology and cosmology, you'd know that there is no analogy between the tooth fairy and a UFO.

Suggesting it just wants to make me puke all over this thread.

In some people's worlds they are. Ghosts especially. Some people honestly think they have scientific evidence for them. (And to follow your logic - there have been thousands of sightings of ghosts by competent scientists/steely eyed military men/paranormal researchers; they can't ALL be wrong.)

They do. They're just not alien spaceships.

Nor do alien spaceships hovering over US cities. But people like to fantasize about them - and some people make very good money selling those fantasies.

All I know of his and your knowledge is what you demonstrate on these forums. And you've demonstrated an appalling lack of understanding. It isn't even about a pilot or astronomer vs a layman, it is more like an ancient Mayan transported to the present and having no comprehension of what he's seeing.

    Oh God, give me strength.

I am not getting into the ghost debate with you any more. We've had that debate and I have told you the differences. You did... in reply to me once show some ''evidence'' that may support there being ghosts seen, but seriously, there are more rational explanations for ghosts. Even I have seen a ghost and even I can admit is was most likely a hallucination caused on by stress.

''They do. They're just not alien spaceships.''

Who says... you and him above me? Let's all just take a moment to thank these guys for solving the mystery. All those real scientists before them, where just mistaken.

In what exactly? You have very little knowledge on UFO sightings... I am no stranger to science, I understand what the possibilities are and you have no clue. Top scientists today are even warning us about extraterrestrial life visiting us... Hawking has done it for god sake. If we were to take your comments and the others into context, you are wanting people to believe that people like me are saying

''And Hawking also says expect a visit from the tooth fairy at night. ''

There is no analogy. One has a real... in fact high possibility of occurring... the other is a fantasy. Get it right.

Yes, clearly this is a religion to you.

Who said who to what now?
    You've demonstrated quite the opposite.
Ahh, so you're back to lying now I see. I wonder if that's why you just got banned.

Exactly! And you have shown some ''evidence'' that may support alien UFO's, but seriously, there are more rational explanations for UFO's. Even I have seen a UFO and can admit is was most likely just another aircraft.

    Occam, primarily.

Who said anyone solved the mystery? You can't explain all the ghost sightings. Doesn't mean they exist.

Any guess on how long it will be before Reiku returns? I am thinking about 6 weeks.

Well, you finally succeeded in getting banned. It was a well deserved honor. Your well documented lack of logic and leaps of imagination are not congruent with rational discourse and you came unarmed to an intellectual battle. Reality won. You will not be missed and your stint here becomes a cautionary tale of how not to behave.

Don't let the screen door smack you in the butt on your way out.

Kind of a shame to be honest... he stuck with his convictions and I was having a rather pleasant conversation with him via PM prior to the ban.

If he would be honest with himself he might grow up. His so called investigation of UFOs showed plainly that it was his religion, he believed in it to the exclusion of reality and nothing anyone said, did or showed him was going to change that(and that's not what got him banned, we have whole threads where only...our less intellectually capable members reside exclusively, Trapped could have toned down his invective, served his temporary ban and continued on). And one would think that if he was interested in truth he would have investigated just what it would mean to travel such inconceivable distances. That is what woke me up from dreamy speculation to realization of limits(plus redirection in the pursuit of the possible within those limits). Rather, his understanding of science was more a belief in magic and a total ignorance of what the Universe actually is. In a country where one in four people don't know that the Earth orbits the sun, I guess my expectations are set a little too high.:wallbang:

Star Trek was one of my favorite shows, I even saw the original black and white transmissions(I live in the hicks)on the one channel we got back then. The old Flash Gordon was really, really cheesy. Lost in Space at least had better eye candy and robots. But all these shows, when dealing with space travel, have the same congruence to reality as the fantasy castles in Disneyland have to the life of your average Medieval peon. Science fiction couldn't really function without warp drive, but that has nothing to do with reality. According to EVERYTHING we have worked out about Relativity, nothing with mass will ever exceed lightspeed through local spacetime, period. And like wormholes, the extra dimensions the Standard Model say must be there are rolled up in the Quantum realm, unavailable to macro structure. Even when we observe the most violent and energetic events in the Universe, nothing going on in, around or coming from those stupendous explosions ever exceeds lightspeed, it is a limit imposed by spacetime. No amount of power we could ever generate will approach those levels, and if they cannot do it, neither will we. And neither will any aliens.

And yet, there are several physicists working on theories of how the alcubierre drive, or other similar "spacial warping" drives could permit travel in excess of "light speed".

    Do remember dear Grumpy;
At one time, it was said to be impossible that the earth revolved around the sun.
At one time, it was said to be impossible for cars to become popular or replace horses.
At one time, it was said to be impossible for a heavier than air vehicle to fly.
At one time, it was "impossible" for mankind to leave the atmosphere.
At one time, it was "impossible" for us to land on the moon.
At one time, it was "impossible" for us to live in space.

Just imagine... in the future, what will people look back on and laugh at us today for thinking is "impossible"?

An alcubierre drive isn't a useful warp drive because the time it takes to form the warp field is equal to the time it takes for light to make the trip. So basically, you could travel to Alpha Centuari in a few seconds -- after sitting on earth in your spaceship for 4 years.
Again: those are just popular crackpot myths. None of them were ever mainstream scientific views except insofar as some of them predate science. But even, for example, the flat earth belief was only weakly and sparsely believed. People who tried to figure it out knew for millennia that the earth was round. Others are just technological problems, which is a lot different from being against the laws of physics.

Just like there are several physicists working on cold fusion. Doesn't mean it's possible. The energies required means all an Alcubierre drive will deliver downrange is plasma IF(and that's a real big if)it works at all. And like entanglement, the speed of transmitting data still remains below lightspeed when comparing point of origin and time on target. Like most other attempts at the fringes of science these are most likely dead ends. All your other examples are descriptions of our ignorance and lack of technical skill, whereas faster than light travel is verboten by the limits of physical reality. There is a big difference.

Poul Anderson wrote a Science Fiction book called "Tau Zero" in 1970. It is still the best description of the best we would ever be capable of in interstellar travel. The Wikipedia article is worth a read...

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tau_Zero

This is an article on the Bussard Ramjet, the best technology we can currently conceive of for "reasonable" travel times between stars(lifetimes, not generations). It will require perfect control of enormous, powerful magnetic fields and fusion plus a moon sized ball of ice for initial acceleration plus life support and impact shielding on the trip. I guess we could spare one of Jupiter's ice balls or a bunch of comets from the Kuiper belt, Pluto would do as well, but each trip takes huge resources with it, no joy rides. And the aliens will see you coming for decades before you arrive. These things are like a firetruck screaming through a neighborhood at three in the morning, you can't miss em'(though, strangely, we don't currently see any). I suppose that we could launch several hundred before we ran out of easily obtained ice. But there are several thousand jet flights PER DAY currently. So, no, interstellar travel will never be easy or common, it's only just barely within the realm of the possible, and then only for the stars in our immediate neighborhood.

    Or impossible.

That's a good example, actually. Cold fusion might be possible but so far there's no good evidence that it is - just a lot of circumstantial evidence, some hype and fanatic supporters. Aliens might visit us someday but again there is no good evidence that they have. Just a lot of hype and some VERY fanatic supporters.

    Sure

The point is that , through my research alot of these UFOs make no sound can make maneuvers that conventional aircraft cannot hope to do and can reach speeds and accelerations that are fantastic , from 1500 to 30,000 mph

And the size of the craft makes no difference
