Very interesting... as they say, everything in moderation! Any other whiskey fans out there?

    "Everything in moderation----------------including sobriety?
    Yeh whiskey every evening----
Ouzo, rum, tequila, brandy, amaretto, red wine, also
(a professor friend smuggles in some home-made brandy from his father in Romania as a gift every Christmas-----really excellent stuff--merry christmas to all and to all a good sip.)

There are people who need to drink and there are those who want to drink. If you find yourself needing to drink you should seek professional help to stop that habit.

Drinking alcohol also improves memory in aging brains. MODERATE drinking though, like 2 beers. Maybe one whisky? Cheers!

"Previous studies have highlighted heart-healthy antioxidants in wine and fertility-boosting ingredients in beer, but new findings suggest yet another reason to continue hitting happy hour: Drinking alcohol after age 60 may help strengthen your memory.

Researchers at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) at Galveston, University of Kentucky, and University of Maryland found that among people ages 60 and older who don’t have dementia, light to moderate alcohol consumption can produce a higher episodic memory— the ability to recall memories of events.

Moderate drinking is defined as a maximum of two alcoholic drinks for men and one for women in a single day, according to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse & Alcoholism (NIAAA).

The study, published in the American Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease and Other Dementias, revealed that moderate alcohol consumption was also linked to a larger volume in the hippocampus, a brain region critical for episodic memory, according to a UTMB press release.

Scientists note that without factoring in the hippocampal volume, the positive relationship between light alcohol use and episodic memory goes away. In other words, hippocampal functioning is crucial for the memory effect to take place."===http://www.foxnews.com/health/2014/...-age-60-can-boost-your-memory-study-suggests/

I think not so much. The phenolics and other antioxidant congeners are imparted by the char in the barrel and the (perhaps) wine or brandy that was aged in the first life of the barrel.

Vodka is pretty much what they call grain neutral spirits, here in the USA, anyhow. The better vodkas are filtered to the point that they just slide down with no antioxidant effects.

Interesting. How many grams of alcohol would be in an "alcoholic drink", in theUS?

Here in the UK, we have a "unit" of alcohol, which is 10g of pure ethanol. This is the amount in the 25ml cap of a cocktail shaker, when it is being used to dispense 40% alcohol spirits - which is the strength of most of them here. National guidelines are for men to drink no more than 21-28 units/week and women no more than 14-21 units/week. In both cases a couple of alcohol-free days is encouraged, to give the liver a rest.

A 75cl bottle of Bordeaux has about 9-10 units in it (alcoholic strength 12.5 - 13%), Burgundy a touch more, as New World wines, often being 14-15%, have 10-11 units. So you can drink about a 1/3 - 1/2 bottle a day, 5 days out of 7 without worrying unduly.

Health factors would not concern me too much or rather the negative. Sure, alcoholics run a high risk of liver damage and probably other problems but moderate drinkers who i have known enough of dont seem affected at all. It does serve a purpose and i have noticed this first hand during trying times.

Now I will partake in miscellaneous ramblings:

I am careful to be mindful of how much i drink and you do run the risk of a dependancy. Luckily, i can only take so much alcohol and be over intoxicated is not a good experience for me or even drinking more than a one or two times a week.

I think it is widely known that alcohol in small quantities is beneficial. Six of one, half a dozen of the other though.

But this is interesting about whiskey. I guess by whiskey they mean fine Kentucky Bourbon. Which i prefer over say Scotch (just a matter of preference though) and Vodka is, to me, on the same level as classic southern U.S whiskey\shine and for that i go for eastern european classics

My own personal preference presently is American beers that run around 8% or higher BVA. Ever have an "Oatmeal Yeti"?

Not sure how this is a "read em and weep" moment - the point was that a little alcohol, in moderation, was good for you - your report states, several times, that the line seems to be after your second alcoholic drink.

Most "boozers" don't stop with 2 beers. Hence the buzz kill.

I have a so called borderline LDL, I am running an experiment on my self . I drink 40cc of 34 % alcohol in vodka every day, I have consumed so far 3 bottles 795 ml, In August I am due to a blood test for lipids and Cholesterol . I should find out if it does any good for my health.
I used to consume blood pressure pills. The pills used to swell my ankles . Since I started to consume the daily 40 cc of vodka my blood pressure is lowered by about 10 mm systolic . I do not consume Toprol anymore nor Norvax . ( In the literature can be found Ethanol act also as a Calcium blocker )
