An interdisciplinary research team led by The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston reports a new breakthrough in countering the deadly effects of radiation exposure. A single injection of a regenerative peptide was shown to significantly increase survival in mice when given 24 hours after nuclear radiation exposure. The study currently appears in Laboratory Investigation, a journal in the Nature Publishing group.

UTMB lead author Carla Kantara, postdoctoral fellow in biochemistry andmolecular biology, said that a single injection of the investigative peptide drug TP508 given 24 hours after a potentially-lethal exposure toradiation appears to significantly increase survival and delay mortality in mice by counteracting damage to the gastrointestinal system.

The threat of a nuclear incident, with the potential to kill or injure thousands of people, has raised global awareness about the need for medical countermeasures that can prevent radiation-induced bodily damage and keep people alive, even if given a day or more after contact with nuclear radiation.

I wonder if an alpha or Betta particle knocks off some Hydrogen in Ribbose how would that be repaired ?

    timojin,
Are you asking how DNA gets repaired after damage by ionizing radiation? If so, quite well, thank you.

The body's repair mechanisms for single and double strand breaks are very robust. And the data says that up to a point, radiation insult will actully INCREASE the repair activity. Since normal reactive oxygen species and thermal stressors create MUCH more single and double strand DNA damage than radioactive contamination at levels 100 times as great as global average back-ground levels, any increase in damage repair activity will tend to REDUCE the cumulative damage in radiated cells. Hormesis in action.

Are you saying thermal exposure is more harmful then radiation ?. I suppose if the radiating element have short half life you might be right , but of the element gets localized , let say none or adipose tissue were the turn over is slow then what happen . I like to hear more comment from you.
