    .
Every time one of these alarmist articles pops up about the dangers of pot smoking I 'm eager to hear what they have to say. After all, marijuana really does seem to good to be true given its huge number of applications, and every single time, upon close inspection, its found that the "studies" are conducted in such away that they are totally meaningless and fail to even provide circumstantial evidence that weed causes any harm at all.

Yes, and if eating carrots caused the same number of deaths as tobacco I'm sure the numbers would be even more frightening. Unless he has evidence that marijuana causes deaths in the way smoking does(which he does not) then his statement is no more meaningful then my carrot one.

Ah yes, I remember that study( I posted on it here when it came out). It did show an association....people who were schizophrenic or depressed were found to be more likely to use cannabis. Hardly surprising as the main reason people smoke cannabis is to make themselves feel better. I'm sure a strong association could be found between prozac and depression or thorazine and schizophrenia as well. This does not mean that it causes it.

This article goes on to advocate further research into the harmful effects of marijuana. The funny thing is, research has been done, and none of it has found any evidence that marijuana hurts people, much of it has found that it is beneficial...One study actually showed that people who smoke marijuana and tobbacco live on average seven years longer then those who smoke tobacco alone..another study, funded by anti-drug zealots for the purpose of proving that weed causes cancer actually showed that THC caused tumors to shrink and even go away. Naturally this study was quickly terminated.

    Ahhh the lovely herb..

Pot and Tobacco both contain tar. Both can lead to Emphysema, high blood pressure.
THC is not the only component of pot smoke. Just as nicotine does not cause cancer nether does THC. It is the method in which we consume it that is the problem. Burning a substance produces many many different compounds. It is some these compounds that are most dangerous.

A few more dangers of pot… Pot is not guided by cleanliness standards. It can contain a host of bacteria that can cause bronchitis and other lung complications. Methods of smoking can also compound the problem. Bongs and pipes are breading ground for bacteria and worst if shared.

Be realistic. Accept that being alive involves the risqué of death.

I’ve heard that people who get many speeding tickets are at higher risqué of death in a road accident. Should we increase the speed limit to save their lives???

Governments can start to help by taking the distribution of pot away from the black market and organized crime. Producing products that are healthier. I’ve seen inhalers on TV… Imagine being able to know how strong pot was before you purchase it. Too know it was not full of harmful bacteria or fungi. Control its distribution to minors. Oh and all those lovely taxes could help the 30000 people that have side effect that lead to death to live on and have a better life…

    The reason

Each year tobacco causes about 120,000 deaths among Britain's 13 million smokers.

But that's ok, tobacco does not make people feel as good as pot does.

Oh, and I bet that if a study were to be done on the matter, they would find that most people who smoke pot also smoke cigarettes.

Exactly! This was going to be my point. if if if...

If anyone wanted to do a serious scientific test on cannabis then why don't they start by measuring the amount, if any, of tar released by the smoke of burning leaves?? It wouldn't be too hard to set up: in fact I'll be surprised if it hasn't been done, however I have not heard of any such experiement (which doesn't say much given my limited scope (

)) but I'm sure the results either way would be big news.

*thinks: "I might set one up in my bedroom. I could set a bucket full of weed alight to fill my room full of smoke and invite people into my room for a while: the first person to freak out (or fall over etc, whatever) is subject to scientific experiment".

Some good points blindman! I can see your arguement for the diseases however I've never really had a problem, but then again I don't really use bongs etc., just straight joints for me.
I would have thought that any bacteria would be kiled off by the heat of the burning bush: the smoke that is being inhaled may contain inactive bacteria at the most! Surely this 'heat' aspect makes smoking safer than drinking (the risks of gut rot etc surely outweigh the risks of smoking herb?)

I agree to a point. inhaling the smoke of any burned plant probably isn't great for your lungs, however marijuana has proven to be beneficial to those suffering from emphysema as it opens the lungs(the reverse of tobbaco)

yeah, true, but you can't blame pot for this, it would be true of anything smoked that way.

The logic used by the creators of the "pot causes depression study" used this reasoning, saying "people who smoke pot are more likely to be depressed therefore pot causes depression" The same logic could be used to show that aspirin causes headaches, water causes dehydration, food causes hunger, etc...

    absolutely

Hi as an occasional "user" I might be considered biased on the subject of cannabis use..!

So I would like to offer another perspective. Ask your self this...why, given the clear dangers, that have been demonstrated to exist, of so many other narcotics already sold over the counters of bars, chemists, restaurants, hotels etc is cannabis considerd worthy of such draconian messures..?

Could it be that it can be home grown, relatively easaly and cheaply, as I have seen and has been demonstarted to me.

Could it leagalisation alter the consumer enviroment, the consumer world view, the consumer psychi...we'll we can't have that now, can we, who would keep the corporate giants in sweeties?

No, the corporate lackies, sry, the politicians, and those who they help keep paranoid about it's use and it's unsubstantiated effects won't have it...wheres the Tax in home grown...???

    micki,
yes it can. and to the nearly limitless potential that hemp has to reshape our world.
A few of the industries that woudl be significantly effected by legalising marijuana:

    pharmaceuticals
    lumber
everything made from lumber or wood pulp
    alcohol
    tobacco

The decline of the consumer culture.

Bingo! I've been watching people get stoned since the days when they called them "reefers". The only things they feel like spending money on are food and records! (Well they have CDs now.) THAT is what corporate America is afraid of. People will start deciding they don't need a promotion or a second job or an MBA, and five credit cards -- just so they can buy a bigger car to drive to work and sharper clothes to wear there.

What lack of evidence? I know for sure that 100% (one hundred per cent) of all cannabis-users eventually die. There!

Rrrrrright! To be alive generally proves to be the most dangerous enterprise of each humble human.
I opt that everyone shall have the right to chose how to die and what to die from.

Being a daily smoker I can say this. It's not good for you. Because it incenerates ambition. If I don't get everything done before I smoke, then nothing would ever get done. But it should still be legal.

It incinerates ambition because you are happy with what you are right now, what is wrong with that?
Besides, you can still pursue a dream, dreams are not incinerated like ambition.

And above this, materialistic ambition is the root of all mankind´s evil.
