"The world's first anti-ageing drug will be tested on humans next year in trials which could result in people being able to live healthily well into their 120s."

Really big statement here. Apparently, scientists believe it's possible to stop people growing old and prevent diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's thanks to diabetes drug Metformin.
Drug has shown promising results in animals, by extending their lives, so FDA gave the approval for human trials starting next year.

Does it slow the aging process that significantly? Because people have been taking this drug for a while for diabetes and it has been around for a long time.

There was an article about this in Nature in July. The argument set forth in the article is that aging can be treated, to slow it down if you will. But I have reservations about the very thought of treating aging like it is an illness. Where does it end?

The other benefits of the drug is that it is possible to also reduce the chance of cancer, or some forms of cancer, if there is a disposition for it, in that regard, it is beneficial. But there are a lot of ethical impacts in treating aging like it is a sort of illness, to treat it to delay death by a couple of decades.

Suffice to say, I am a bit meh about this. I don't really know how to feel about it. Sure, we can see our children and grandchildren grow up, and our great grandchildren. But is that really what we want? How are we going to look and live like at 120 years of age? Are we going to be a greater burden on our children, grandchildren, etc, and society? I don't know if I'd want that. It raises a lot of questions which results in answers that make me uncomfortable in a lot of ways.

It says right in the bible that God will not let people live to be older than 120 years. So it is not possible to live to be older than 120, uh, unless the bible is incorrect - like that is possible....

    ISAIAH 65: 19---21
And I will rejoice in Jerusalem, and joy in my people: and the voice of weeping shall be no more heard in her, nor the voice of crying.
20 There shall be no more thence an infant of days, nor an old man that hath not filled his days: for the child shall die an hundred years old; but the sinner being an hundred years old shall be accursed.
21 And they shall build houses, and inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, and eat the fruit of them.

I wonder if God had known about Metformin when he said this...

Maybe he's writing up a Bible Part II, with this section amended.

Well, I'm on 2000mg per day, so we'll see.

I hope to live forever. So far, it's going great.

No I was talking about Genesis 6:3 -
3 And the Lord said, “My Spirit shall not strive[a] with man forever, for he is indeed flesh; yet his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.”

Didn't Moses and his ilk live, like, 900 years?

Nah moses died at 120 years. It was from noah on back who lived to 800+ years, but after the flood God decided that 120 years was the max. Many people in recent decades have lived longer than 120 years but that must have arithemic error.....

Yet Genesis came before the flood.

The flood was written about in Genesis 7. Of course Noah lived to be 950 years old after God said that man will only live to be 120 years, weird, huh? I am not going to discuss the bible here anymore because we have hijacked the thread which is not fair.
