A few weeks ago I happened by chance to be playing Chess with a good friend of mine, Dale. We were at a sleepover and Cactus Jack was playing a nice, soft guitar rhythm in the background, and things were very calm. Dale is fairly well known to be a damn good chess player, and we had a hell of a game. Probably one of the most fun ever--I was at the point of not caring who one merely because of all the thinking I was doing while actually playing. Anyway, about midway through the game (the turning point, actually) Dale moved his queen back, for one reason or another, and I quickly realized that he had, by accident or on purpose, made an illegal move. He moved it in the shape of an L, actually.

However at the same time I also realized that he had moved the queen, unwittingly, apparently, right into the sights of my rook. Needless to say I took the queen, and after he put up an amazing fight I took him down. Here's my question: would you have done the same thing? He made a mistake, but he made the move, although it was illegal, perhaps he should have been punished for making such a mistake...croicky, I don't know....

There's also the chance that I had just made a mistake or something, because as I mentioned, Dale is a really good chess player and probably would not move his queen into the wrong place by accident. And he certainly didn't do it on purpose because it cost him the game. Had he kept the queen my future victory would have been thrown into serious jeopardy.

i would have told him. just that generally when i'm playing chess it'sa friendly game and it's not that big a deal if i win or not. that and the fact that i generally lose. but had it been a real competative game i'm not sure if i would have. I've cut a corner or two in competition in order to win before. so it wouldn't be a first.

You should be playing Go, not chess.

Yeah, Go is a lot better than chess. But I would have pointed out his mistake anyway, because any empty win is not as good as a fullfilling loss to somebody really good.

    Play Go

Go is about putting stones on a 19x19 matrix and try to surrond your opponents. How fun is that? I have more fun playing checkers than go.

Its all a part of a white-man's conspiracy. Why should black pieces have to move after white ones and not the other way around? (jk)

I don't play chess. I know the rules just through general knowledge and it does seem like it would be kind of fun.
Better than card games, man I hate cards.
Anyway, if dale is your friend I would have told him but in a ridiculing sort of way like as you're are taking out his queen say "haha loser you just did an illegal move and payed the price SUCKER! You slip with pollux and you're gonna get burned" etc etc.
Also if he is as good as you say he is I wouldn't have shut up about it for like 3 hours

Yeah, but winning was good enough for me.

You should play chess, after awhile you can really see its effects on your mind. You'll start to think more logically. You'll change old habits so they make more sense, take less time, etc...

I agree with you Spacemanspiff, I would have told him, and for the same reasons. I've never played Go Fen and Disposable88, is it any good. Thanks for the insight into Go Joeman.

I think your probably correct Clockwood. I seem to have a belief that Chess has it's origins in Africa, around the time it was Colonised by England. I don't know where i got this information from but i have reason to believe that this is true, and yes, White moves first, something that should become a flexible part of the Chess rules, in my opinion.

Why don't you like card games Dr lou?

    .

Pollux, a profound observation. I agree Chess, and other games, can change the way people see the world, and it can help[ people to see their own role in it (context can always only be helpful), but one must become almost submerged to see these things, in my opinion.

I'd have told him. I used to play competively in college. I was ranked as high as 1400, but nowhere near that now. Haven't played in several years. Anyhow,my opponent at West Point telling me once that I'd made an illegal move with a knight. Up to that point, he was winning and I was too busy concentrating on not losing that I moved the piece incorrectly. If he'd taken the knight, I was certainly dead. We ended up with a draw instead of him winning. I asked him why afterward and he said he did not want to win that way. Besides we both knew he was a better player anyway and my not losing wouldn't change that.

The thing is, we were both pretty evenly matched. If I had pointed out the move with the queen the game could have gone either way. But again, let me stress that I'm not even sure that he did move it incorrectly. So, the question becomes more like a half-hypothetical.
