My computer won't play .avi files. It has before and now just stopped. I have even rebooted the whole system and still no change. If anyone could tell me how to make them work I would appreciate it.

What Operating System are you using, what player are you attempting to use, what file are you attempting to view, what were you doing when the fault occurred and what three recent applications have you installed?

Windows ME, Media Player but it doesn't work with real player either, it's not really a faullt it just says error downloading codec, but it doesn't make sense since it played them before.

You might not have the right codec. See what codec the file was encoded in and get that codec or just get virtualdub and encode the file in the codec that is already installed on your pc.

    Good luck

If you're looking for codecs I'd recommend the kazaa codec pack (still no spyware) from here. It has basically every audio and video codec you will ever need.

I had some problem with DivX : you have to use the last version for some movies (depend on the encoder) bu sometime the last version create some bugs... I installed it and then it didn't work anymore. The solution : un-install the codec (if it's DivX, it should be in your Windows panel) and then re-install it. You can use an other OS if you've got a multi-boot system (I used Linux for one movie that didn't display images under Windows).

Also many people don't know that most new movies are encoded in X-vid codec which divx doesn't play. X-vid codecs are hard to find..well the working ones anyway.

    Increan,

You can download a program called CodecViewer at this website:

    http://www.snake-basket.de/programs.html

Run the program and choose the AVI that won't play. The program will tell you which codec you will need to download and install in order to play the AVI.

Thanks that worked perfectly, although I still had to download quicktime for .mov files.
