"what use would darwin be if there were no technology to publish books"?

A very interesting thought indeed, who made the bigger impact, the scientist who did the research, or the engineer who enabled it to be distributed (and for the research to be done in the first place)?
    I favour the engineer personally.

Your metaphor worked great until you mentioned a real engineer. No engineer, it doesn't matter who it is.

In Darwin's case we can check - the engineering (and engineers) existed for hundreds of years before Darwin came along.

Do you think Darwin was more evolved?

a little thorny and connected to other issues which tend to digress, though good for the concept of debating the premise of value to factual conceptualization as a body of human knowledge.
err-go is science still science if it is not documented and distributed ?
    yes and no ...
comparative value by the observer ... terms of reference must be predefined to give known values that define limits
this is in part, part of my point in that we can only conceive what we can interpret to become a measure of a known value(perception and valuation and self awareness of the value of others values ... etc).

    Edison Vs Bell debate ?
or a metaphor to enshrine capitalism as a morality ?

Whatever you are trying to say, try just saying it.

Well engineering had been around for hundreds of years until Darwin came along? Darwin, so what?

    thousands of years ...

my comment that no one seemed to have a pick at was eluding to the conceptual theory(i am theorizing) that thought as philosophy contains the construct of the engineering process of the scientific mind.
wishing not to detract and get into a mechanics Vs theorists type of debate...

one of the primary objections has been around Darwin having a scientific theory that was unique and created by him.
were it not for his education and learning of past people of equally great or greater minds, might he still have the access to mental tools to allow him to "create" regardless of how much of a genius he may be.

"original theory" seems a hard task master to apply as a species step up intellectually.
many people probably have original theory concepts.
however, without the dogmatic single minded focus to live eat and breath their passion(intellectual psychological philosophical) would we still find ourselves looking at an "original theory"
or just random note books that may have been stumbled upon ?

    Darwin put things together.
uncovered clues, measured, quantified and recorded data to put it into a coherent form that others could comprehend.
this makes him an inventor as a creative and an educator.
his definition and construction of a theory is singular to the greater sum of leg work he did living his passion to be able to come to that point.
thus we find David, doing the leg work, gaining the funding, helping to collect distribute and interpret concepts...

the concept to look at the whole person and seek to quantify their contribution to the species as being only worth an original theory seems a bit odd to my way of thinking.

the medium is not scientific journals among a small minority of wealthy intellectuals.
it is a mass population of many society's and cultures.
while one might be able to pick at specifics of scientific concepts around application of scientific method.
Davids end sum total has delivered a quantifiable of new scientific information to millions of people and that was while living his passion.

are we not in the information Era ?
is not film and video the ultimate form of communication ?
has he delivered that on a quantifiable basis(with help from extremely highly skilled and dedicated people who all deserve credit)

i have no particular desire to lay waste to above posters sense of reason and idealism's.
i am raising this as a concept for discussion

are we in the era of communication, conservation & climate change ?

So we have evidence for how to distribute credit for what followed from Darwin's work.

it was interesting watching(a short you-tube clip) David walk around Darwins' exhibit
he looked like he was at home.
if Darwin had an apprentice, i think David would be one.
