I can't seem to use the site with SSL. Does this forum support HTTPS? If not, what's stopping it from doing so?

I enjoyed using this site during my earlier years and returned to see if it was still about. I hadn't expected to find it in an insecure state! It even lets me log in over plain text.

That's a good question for the owners. I'm not really comfortable with the plaintext login, either. I can't see any reason why it can't support HTTPS or something.

How does one contact the site admin or whoever configures the website? Or not worth the effort?

Practically the entire rest of internet has for years gone over to inherently safer https protocol. Here at mid 2021, still nothing more than old posts saying 'yeah, it would be a good idea'. But evidently always zero SF mod/admin action to change the status quo. Sad doesn't quite capture it.

Let's not be too silly about this ongoing situation. Alerted someone at another site a few months back and the change from http to https was implemented quickly and easily.
Costs? That site was already running on a shoestring budget so presumably costs if any would have necessarily been trivial. Certainly compared to the enhanced security for all site users such a change to what is the overwhelming standard practice this day and age afforded. To even suggest I as a pleb member with zero involvement in admin here should somehow be 'the one to pay' is absurd.

so you are saying YOU will pay for it ?

    changing "free"
    to
    "paid"
    is money

    whos money ?

    the original inquiry
sounds like a whiny man baby corporate using their work computer expecting something for free

they want other people to pay for their lack of computer password security

Agreed. It doesn't cost much to get the SSL certificate and then you change a few links and that's it.
But since it requires the owners to do something we know that's not going to happen here. If the owners were interested in doing anything there are a lot of things that would be different here.

Indeed. One takes a calculated risk and aware folks add as many browser security extensions as possible.

Q-reesus, why didn't you tell us that you are a corporate man-baby?

I was deeply ashamed to admit it Seattle. Now that I've been outed, what can I do but weep and sulk?

A man-baby can't change I suppose. Just be yourself (and weep and sulk).

Great advice - weep'n & sulk'n is ok for males these days. All about discovering one's feminine side.

It might turn out that your gender is fluid and non-binary anyway.

Yet another spammer invasion able to post their spam as new threads, evidently at will. Is there a single https forum site where this happens at all? With zero meaningful mod feedback to the few concerned posters here, what does it take before this absurd long standing situation is remedied? Or is this actually intended to be a honeypot site where dissident posters actual details are easily traced by 'interested parties'?
Yeah - 'a touch of conspiracy theorist paranoia' there as the usual suspects here just knew would come out! Oh dear dear.

PS - if a 'responsible' mod finally chimes in, to the effect spammer free access is just down to the shitty loose forum security check policies, well it's still the case http is inherently insecure this day and age! Cheers.

    Q-reeus:

Thank you for your feedback, as always. It turns out, funnily enough, that spammers use many different ISPs, including ones used by potentially-legitimate internet forum users.

In principle, one could IP block entire countries from access to this forum quite easily, and that might eliminate a lot of the spam we get. Can you think of any possible downside to such a move?
