In my opinion it's too soon to tell that evolution and Darwinism are unquestionable fact.

That's because there are too many things we just don't know yet and we will probably need at least another 1000 years of scientific progress to even begin to tackle all those difficult problems.

To what does this refer? Has anyone claimed a theory is fact?

 

To reiterate, because there still seems to be some confusion:

Evolution is fact.

It can be demonstrated directly that critters pass on traits to their offspring, resulting in change over time. Goldfish, Betta fish, guppies, dogs, cats etc. do pass on their traits to their young. Having observed this, we can never "unobserve" it. It is fact.

Evolution by Natural Selection (Darwinism) is theory.

It can never be directly demonstrated - without resorting to a theoretical model - that animals change over time due to selection pressures in nature. We have an excellent model that explains what we see very well - but it's a model. And it can change.

billvon raised the example of the moths in 19th century London as a phenomenon for which we have built a model based on natural selection. But it is turning out to not to be quite so simple, and may even be partially apocryphal. We don't actually know for a fact why the moth population saw a change over time.


There's a difference between an observation and an explanation. And therein lies the difference between fact and theory.

 

That's heredity, not evolution.

We have seen it directly. If you don't like the moth example, consider the rapid evolution of the invasive Asian shore crab in New England vs. native blue mussels, or the Italian wall lizards on Pod Mrčaru, or cane toads in Australia, or antibiotic resistance. These are all examples of evolution driven by natural pressures. (Artificial pressures in the case of antibiotic resistancec.)
