An HP laptop. The specs aren’t really too important since I mainly spend my days logging into VMs or SSH sessions and writing code.
I like mine primarily because it’s compatible with a docking station with outputs for multiple monitors.

For anyone that has the same sort of needs, I’d recommend shopping from HPs business class models.

Unless there’s physical damage (ie - fell in the ocean, caught fire, shot out of a cannon), your laptop is probably not dead. Take it to someone who can repair it.

Up until recently, a HP Pavilion desktop which was 7+ years old. Just recently replaced it with an HP Omen (AMD RYZEN 7 processor and Geforce RTX 2060 GPU). However unless you do gaming or 3D modeling, this is likely overkill for you.

I stay away from HP products as they tend to not last very long. Dell products seem to last longer as far as laptops are concerned. This year, I built my own PC, it was easy, cost effective and should not require upgrades for some time. Most PC stores have online build menus that often start with the Processor and provides lists of parts all compatible with it so you can't make mistakes. The rest was plug and play.

I have an ACER desktop. I bought it new for less than 400 dollars. I don't do gaming and desktops seem to be more reliable and cheaper than equivalent laptops. I already had a monitor and printer so that price was just for the desktop.

I have a Chromebook coming on Friday. It's not to replace my desktop but just to have something I can use to watch videos in another room. I never use my living room anymore and it's the largest room in my house so that's why I'm getting the Chromebook. This one is a refurbished unit that is only 350 dollars (why can't we use the dollar sign on this site without the formatting going crazy?). A new one is about 550 dollars (refurbished is like new however).

Regarding your purchase...I think it makes financial sense to get a desktop. Beyond that it's just a matter of how much you want to pay and what you are going to use it for. I don't like to go overboard with the price anymore since it's not necessary and they become functionally obsolete (usually) before they actually wear out.

My first reaction to the title was :
"Why are we talking about dead 3-year-olds? Ew."

Then I saw the 'HP' and thought:
"Ah. No. Someone has a dead 3HP outboard."

Either way, I was in. Alas, 'twas more mundane than either.

    H0nest truth.

I'm running an HP desktop that I've had for 10+ years. I bought it used - Windows XP was updated in 2007.

The only complaint I have is that the back panel is made of spit and spider-webs. The speaker jack rattles loose. I half expect it to fall out.

I love my 15 inch acer chromebook but I doubt it would be suitable as a replacement for your current system.
As to hp I have a hardwire hp printer that still works if you put ink in it. I still miss my compaq armada so I can't tell you about the best new tech.

Appreciate that I'm late the party but...

What are you using it for? Gaming? Office? Video editing?
I'll assume not gaming, as you didn't mention the GFx card, and that's usually the defining part of a gaming rig... Just make sure your Gfx card can easily handle 2 monitors.

If just office stuff, do you need something as powerful as the Ryzen 7 4700G? A Ryzen 5 might offer better value for money (CPU probably USD100 cheaper etc, and a 2600 maybe USD200 cheaper).
    16Gb ram is plenty.
512GB SSD is usually more than adequate for most users. If you need more storage then the trick is to use the SSD for your operating system and most accessed applications, and then get a large (2TB etc) HDD as a secondary drive. That's what I do.

    I run a self-built Ryzen 5 2600 with GTX1060 graphics card. 16Gb RAM, 256 Gb SSD, and 2TB HDD.
2 monitors running at 1920 x 1080, although only one on an HDMI cable

Cheap motherboard, as I don't need the overclocking capabilities that others offer.
It's a reasonably good gaming rig... won't run the latest games at highest graphics settings, but then I don't buy the latest games.
Plus it's a capable office machine. And I tend to just upgrade bits as and when they get outdated (or die).

most serious businesses buy dell for their staff
cheaper options appear to be taken by those companies that run a larger IT department that can swap out parts for their existing laptop cheaper range products built for bottom end spec network capability

but is everyone only ever going to live on a cloud with terribly pathetic windows 10 os ?

how many businesses plan to be open in 10 years time using the same staff & computers ?

    what killed it ?

For appropriate advice I think you need to be clear about what you intend to use it for, which leads to what sort of hardware you need.
For example I use a HP desk top merely as a passive entertainment app. porthole/machine. Video streaming, photo storage, cloud up and down and basic office needs, forum posting... cost $300 AU and does the job easy. Almost ready for replacement. (nearly out of store guarantee) Suffice to say my smart phone or tablet seem to have have more power. I bought HP because they seem to match their hardware choices. No expert but from experience they seem to find reasonably compatible choices.
Personally if I was into high end gaming, graphics etc (CAD etc) I would run the porthole machine for passive entertainment and keep the big machine safe.

    To the forum generally:

looks like windows 10 is limiting development past 3GH processing
i dont know if that is because of physical material like speed of copper & temps of boards etc
but win 10 eats processor speed and seems to fight with browsers which try to eat ram & processor

there must be a point where apple step off to keep ahead on cad 3d
where microsoft step in to keep the same product for home users

the world cant afford to have everyone buy a new computer

the big chinese shift of electronics seems to have sacrificed peripheral functions on boards which has narrowed over all capability
which is then exploited by less is more

its like the new arms race is a race to have the computer that does the least and costs the most
    crazy

have you tried looking for a computer games shop that sells computer games ?
they have all been wiped out by xbox & play station which have wasted trillions in global resources as most of those game consoles have been abandoned and the games now useless
and now the computer game industry devastated

in a time when we need to see a big shift back toward computer games and desk top centralization to save massive amounts of resources

but the sheople marketing executives dont think that way
they are only interested in using the last of the worlds resources to make a fast dollar and have their grandchildren be the best dressed cannibals in the next version of humanity's climate change disaster movie
    but the real thing

    looking at the news
i see the news about ukrain
fake values being sold as the only possible option

how many millions of syrian war refugees would vote for turning ukrain into Moscow instead of into war ravaged syria
they were not a liberal western democracy to begin with
so half of nothing from either end of the ideological scale is not going to work

modern computers have become much the same
the driving forces are not the ideal outcomes for the users except those to lazy to get off their ass and learn anything

and look at everyone buying new cell phones that do almost no basic difference between the old model & the new model
which they give back to e-waste & pollution and dont care what happens to it & wont pay for it to be properly safely recycled
    CRAZY !

cell phone purchase has become the new form of consumer porn for all ages
all the best type of cell phones have stopped being made
now they have been replaced with crappy short life smart screen models
which get made useless in a year or soo by the companies

strong regulation on recycling needs to be made as quickly as possible

    Interesting points...
Not really qualified enough to comment, but the impression I get is that windows 10 does indeed intend to limit the need for local processing and place the emphasis on cloud based processing.
generally switching from software you can buy outright to software you have to subscribe to.
    a state of false value...
Years ago when you purchased a machine ( XP and lower) you got typically included in the package hundreds of dollars worth of software that could be run independent of the web. As such depending on need, the value of the included software was extremely important when making decisions about purchasing the package. Also privacy was up to you and not a cloud, where data mining would inevitably be going on.
Windows 10 sees effectively no data security what so ever (in my unqualified opinion) due to it's apparent App based philosophy.
With the more comprehensive use of Fiber for connections the need for high end processing local systems reduces I guess. But the trade off is a lack of security on data and that constant stream of subscription payments.
I guess it wont be long before they are giving away the machines for nothing so that they can run their cloud based businesses with greater volumes..
I am unsure whether Apple will ignore such a profitable market but the real cost of getting back to the sort of local systems we used to have (offline processing) is a hell of lot higher than what we , the general consumer are being led to believe.
Not sure about the reduction in console gaming but the game changer here was optic fiber (unlimited) and how downloading the game ( with permanent access to the purchase lib) rather than disc use has increased massively. All Local game shops (discs) have disappeared shortly after local rollout of fiber.
Disc drives will become a thing of the past or at least an optional rather than a necessity like it used to be.
    consumerism at it's finest....

How long before that dystopian future hits us? Not long....

it is built to data mine and provide that data to apps
so it is counter productive to data protection
it is data creation(forces users to load personal data to be mined & then sold off) & collection and extraction

    anti small govt
if you have no overt monster providing you with your internet service, then you have no computers or computer use

    completely communist/fascist type of system
    anti libertarian
all of society becomes slave to the mighty corporation of whom ever owns it.
in this case its all private with their own agendas which can be bought at the right price

why do you think cell phone companies are price gouging like the end times !
because most professionals get given a free cell phone by their company
    70k per year & above

it is an installed class system of greed self perpetuation
where up and coming low salary workers are forced to abide by social professional rules to purchase the expensive cell phone to be considered for the promotion
so the cycle feeds its self as a social class system
personal life class & professional business class
mixed into 1 big orgy of evangelical pyramid self development online business

but who is going to buy out the cell phone companies ?
    mark ? jack ? jeff ?
not a chance they know they will be hammered by usa anti trust laws
trying to cut the baby up to get their pound of flesh & feed the greed monster which runs on the treadmill that keeps the lights on

in walks the best looking stripper
    china
they can give away their own cheaply made cell phones for pay per week subscription charges to workers
and wipe American consumerism off the global map
    if they wanted
any supposed cost put forward is a false cost
    because it doesn't factor in
    3 key things
    1 e-waste cost to recycle
    2 natural resources
3 consumer market pricing for job incomes/wages

how can any ordinary worker afford a $2,000.00 cell phone every 2 years ?
what profit does it produce ? = 0
so where is the value in the product ?
    in entertainment as discretionary
which must be leaned against wages as compulsory employment pillars

but everyone wants to cut n run
that's what made covid so popular

    all online shops ..
    which are effectively apps ...
and here we are in full circle to the personal info wars & open access to hackers
& everyone lying about who they are so they can make a new profile to get access to their computer network in the cloud through social media

so its moving the process of self learning to complicit hypocrisy as a system of moral networking
not my ideal concept but people love their hypocrisy's

we have the dystopian future already
it is just being run in analog mode to make more money as the premium price ed of the global monetary system is gamed against lowest working class 3rd world countrys.

what use is upper class if lower class have the same type of computers and living conditions

additionally people lie a lot about their wast & recycling
only around 50% recycle when no one is looking
and if you ask them who recycles
all of them will put their hand up

I use a raspberry pi 4 ($35 with 2 GByte ram) for everything. You'd need to add keyboard, mouse and screen unless you already have them.
And an SSD disc thing (about $25).

My 2012 HP Envy 17 is about to go South - the graphics card keeps crashing and 'recovering'. I am replacing it with a custom Origin EON 17 - X laptop as I do a lot of art, fractal geometry, photo and serious gaming. It will live downstairs in the living/dining room. This computer is a very serious AMD/Radeon/Soundblaster system with a 32" curved ACER display...+ a couple of printers, scanner, 5.1 sound etc. It lives in my second story office and is a real screamer. Both the new laptop and the current desktop run around $3k, but I use them a lot. My iphone8 is in my pocket for emergencies when I go out for some miles.
