"The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" - Douglas Adams
"Red Mars", "Green Mars", "Blue Mars" - Kim Stanley Robinson

I know they are very different kinds of sci-fi but i desperately want to see these books in particular on the big screen with a big budget.

I also saw some people mentioned "Ender's Game" by Orson Scott Card, that's another good one.

    any thoughts?

I loved Kim Stanley Robinson's 'Mars' books, but I don’t think that they would make a very good movie. So much of the books were about character development and personal interaction that it would be awfully hard to turn them into an interesting movie.

edgar, i understand your dislike that book is really a love it or hate it kind of thing. I was actually introduced to them first on audiobook (read by the author and unabridged) and i fell in love. I find that pythonesque humour hilarious.

Nasor, I had thought the same as you untill the release of LOTR (also very character driven and complex but they did a satisfactory job) now, I think it MAY be possible. I'd just love to see somone, properly motivated and funded give Robinsons books a shot. It'll either work or it won't, trying can't hurt.

by the way did u read the 4th book? "martians" i believe its called, I just started it. In my opinion this serise is one of the best written and most thought provoking sci-fi ive ever read. I pull them out about once a year and get something new every time.

No, I've only read the Red, Gren, and Blue books. I didn't know that there was a new one out. I'll have to pick it up.

I think it would make a great movie. It would need to be altered a bit though.

    Nasor,

I cant officially recomend "martians" just because i've barely started it, but if its even close to the quality of the others ill be happy.

True buts thats always the case when transferring a book to the screen, the unabridged audiobooks alone are about 5 hours in length so some things would have to go or at least change. Its a shame but even I couldn't take a 5 hr movie.

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy should be made into a computer-animated movie, like Shrek. It's one of my favorite books ever however I doubt any filmmaker would be able to do it justice.

Standard movie or 3d animation, I just want the show!

I couldn't agree more Pollux V, those books are (in my opinion) frigg'n masterpeices! I have all the audiobooks on my ipod (kinda sad in a, "oh my god am i ever a geek" kind of way but what can i say). The best part is they are read by douglas adams himself, i love them!

also keep in mind, whether its 3d or standard its made by a filmmaker in both cases. 3d in itself is just another tool, the creator is the important thing.

Aaah the hitch hitcher guide was already made into a movie. It started out as a radio program, then books then TV series, then motion picture. All this happen late 70’s early 80’s and yes it was all made in England. Yes the greatest sci-fi comedy of all time.

As for Red Mars: that was the most boring piece of crap I ever had the unpleasantness to read, if there was ever a nazi book burning festival today it would be one of the book I would bring that and the rest of the series for kindling.

I did like his other book a bit better "Icehenge"

    WellCookedFetus,

Im surprised that you didn't like the "mars chronicles" (i think thats what Robinsons series is called anyway). Its really one of the best ive ever read, just goes to show how different our perspectives can be. you love "hitchhikers", I love "hitchhikers" yet we are opposites on the other ... thats neat.

WCF just sucks, all 4 Mars books rocked, RED MARS is my favorite scifi book of all time. The drama, the technology, the world so easily recognizable as our own, the characters and their evolution... Hitchhiker's guide books are equally fantastic, hilarious, great!
