1/8 as likely seems a better way to say the statistic than 8 times less likely.

    and
    This from the Irish times:
Covid: 54% of hospital patients with virus are fully vaccinated
    and

    here's the link:
    https://www.irishtimes.com/news/hea...nts-with-virus-are-fully-vaccinated-1.4670229

    The point being
that a vaccine mandate ain't no panacea
The mandate will not guarantee the safety of the children.

It seems that as more people are fully vaccinated, the percentage of covid hospitalizations of fully vaccinated people will continue to rise. (simply because a greater percentage of the population will have been fully vaccinated)
and, in the face of that
some politicians are opposed to mask mandates

Needing a host to replicate itself

only a very stupid virus would kill off its hosts.
(If the virus gets even more stupid---maybe we should run it for political office?)

    Doesn't work that way.
No one dies of Covid. They die of pre-existing conditions or opportunistic maladies. Covid knows nothing of comorbidities.

Nothing will guarantee the safety of children. Still, it's a good idea to vaccinate them, and a good idea to have them not eat lead paint.
    Of course.
That has nothing to do with the previous statement.
Saying "oh, that's a stupid virus" has zero to do with how deadly a virus is.

Viruses don't really care about their hosts. All they care about is reproducing (like all such pathogens.) A virus that infects someone, then just lives in their bodies for years without spreading, will not do well in terms of evolution. A virus that infects someone, makes them miserable for six months, then kills them, will be far more successful. The only evolutionary drive that viruses have drives them towards not killing their hosts quickly.

    My beloved spouse opined recently:
"If you have to tell them that what you said was a joke--- It probably wasn't very funny".
