Sport. What is there about sport?

What is there about sport making it worthwhile participating in or worth watching, and possibly supporting?

In a team type sport is it possibly mateship? Combined competitiveness?

Somewhile back a swimmer (in an Olympic race?) won by 1/1,000 of a second. Years of training and the win could have been the result of a water disturbance from a rival in the adjacent lane

Or his created random disturbance pushing his rival back

How is a win by 1/1,000 of a second not a draw?

Some so called sports I would not call sports. Motorbike or car racing. How are they sports?

Precision operation of mechanical car equipment does not have same ring

but in essence that is what is occurring

Boxing!!! Sport!!! Trying to wear down a competitor through hitting them, causing them to go down on the floor so exhausted and unable to get up during a count of 10 seconds!!!

I don't either but wouldn't it be a dull world indeed if we all liked the same few things.

The anthropology of sport will make no more sense to you than the anthropology of religion.

But, sure, in any one lifetime occurring within a cooperative social cohort, a good amount of it is conditioned belief and behavior.

 

Indeed. It is one of the few things widely accepted that men can bond over.

In my next life, I will force myself to follow sports, just so I can have conversations at office lunch parties and weddings.

I have just, briefly, glanced at this about a golfer winning ($)5 million

For wacking a little ball from a distance into a hole (cup? Its a HOLE, lining it does not make it a cup)

That ($)5 million comes from people who pay to WATCH someone (and probably buy merchandise) doing this (hit ball into a hole thing)

I definitely do not get sport. In first post I mentioned technology being used to seperate the first place winning swimmer from second place swimmer by 1/1,000 of a second. Not the most exciting use of technology but since no-one would be able to see such a miniscule gap technology would be a solution

One, well it is not even a rule (use a technology timing device to seperate race positions - least don't think it is???) one rule for swimming and another (don't use technology slo-mo video recording to detect rule breaking) for walking

Solve the problem (?), don't call it a Walking Race, call it The Slowest Runners Race

Did you ever notice that advertising during golfing events is geared toward the sort of people who need to hire international conglomerates and reinsurers?

To the other, the joke about golf is long known: Only the Scottish. Still, that doesn't explain anybody else. I mean, they also invented curling, but golf is golf. Curling, at the very least, makes sense.

American football is an actual war game, a kind of gladiator sport. Boxing and MMA are obvious in that aspect.

If you look back to notions like Olympic sport, these are activities that pertain in their way to warfare; they are virtuous performances reflective of societal need. And by the time we get around to the bit with stone skirts and tearing out people's hearts, again, look, the anthropology of sport is pretty apparent. As to audiences, people will gamble on anything, and a lot of the rest is conditioned belief and behavior. What do I care if some underdog manages to upset England in Cup play, or some such, but I'm an American, and that's enough to make it worth a muntz.

Speaking of the Scottish - Tossing the Caber. Not going to look at the rules, going to rely on memory

The aim is to have the tree trunk land on the other end and fall away landing as close to 90° as possible from its launch. Guessing points are deducted (no idea how many points are provided at the start) for how many degrees left or right the Caber deviates

When I was a teenager in highschool(circa 1965), I worked nights and weekends for an electrician who was an ex county mounty. He sold me his 1957 ford interceptor---it took a bit of effort to get her running again after being set aside in a gravel parking lot for the better part of a decade---but once fired up, she could flat out scoot.

so one fine day while cruising the back roads of Wisconsin, I saw a light blue car following me---so, I punched it.

Arriving at my mother's place and pulling into the driveway and parking the car
I saw the same light blue car pulling into the driveway
