What is there about sport making it worthwhile participating in or worth watching, and possibly supporting?

In a team type sport is it possibly mateship? Combined competitiveness?

Somewhile back a swimmer (in an Olympic race?) won by 1/1,000 of a second. Years of training and the win could have been the result of a water disturbance from a rival in the adjacent lane

Or his created random disturbance pushing his rival back

How is a win by 1/1,000 of a second not a draw?

Some so called sports I would not call sports. Motorbike or car racing. How are they sports?

Precision operation of mechanical car equipment does not have same ring

but in essence that is what is occurring

Boxing!!! Sport!!! Trying to wear down a competitor through hitting them, causing them to go down on the floor so exhausted and unable to get up during a count of 10 seconds!!!

    Don't get sports

I don't either but wouldn't it be a dull world indeed if we all liked the same few things.

Rather than try to get it, revel in the diversity that is the 7 billion+ different interests in the world.

The thing about a prospective Sciforums history of sport is, well: You're joking, right?

The anthropology of sport will make no more sense to you than the anthropology of religion.

But, sure, in any one lifetime occurring within a cooperative social cohort, a good amount of it is conditioned belief and behavior.

Indeed. It is one of the few things widely accepted that men can bond over.

In my next life, I will force myself to follow sports, just so I can have conversations at office lunch parties and weddings.

I tried it once. I said "How bout them Jays?" And the guy thought I was sincere, and answered back. I was so terrified I threw myself off the terrace to my death.

    https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-03-15/australia-s-cameron-smith-wins-players-championship/100910128

I have just, briefly, glanced at this about a golfer winning ($)5 million

For wacking a little ball from a distance into a hole (cup? Its a HOLE, lining it does not make it a cup)

That ($)5 million comes from people who pay to WATCH someone (and probably buy merchandise) doing this (hit ball into a hole thing)

If you want the ball in the hole walk up to the hole and put it in the hole

Sport - an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.

    Seriously? golf is entertainment?

I definitely do not get sport. In first post I mentioned technology being used to seperate the first place winning swimmer from second place swimmer by 1/1,000 of a second. Not the most exciting use of technology but since no-one would be able to see such a miniscule gap technology would be a solution

THEN we come to the sport of WALKING, also known as Pedestrianism - catchy

REALLY walking is a sport? I did not know I did sport every day

Extract about Rules in a Walking race

Race walking differs from running, where an athlete often has both feet off the ground during their strides in a sprint. In race walking, however, athletes must always have one foot in contact with the ground at all times, as visible to the human eye. Judges are present at events to ensure the rule is enforced.

    My bold and enlarged text

    https://olympics-com.cdn.ampproject.org/v/s/olympics.com/en/featured-news/all-you-need-to-know-about-race-walking?amp_js_v=a6&amp_gsa=1&usqp=mq331AQKKAFQArABIIACAw==#aoh=16473348390182&referrer=https://www.google.com&amp_tf=From %1$s&ampshare=https://olympics.com/en/featured-news/all-you-need-to-know-about-race-walking

So - In race walking, however, athletes must always have one foot in contact with the ground at all times, as visible to the human eye. where frequently the human eye cannot detect if one foot is indeed in contact with the ground at all times do we use technology (slo-mo video recording)? Nope

One, well it is not even a rule (use a technology timing device to seperate race positions - least don't think it is???) one rule for swimming and another (don't use technology slo-mo video recording to detect rule breaking) for walking

Solve the problem (?), don't call it a Walking Race, call it The Slowest Runners Race

    Am I good or what?

    Still don't get sports

    Late in adding this sorry

    Ask Google

    Is Chess a sport?

Yes, chess is recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as a sport. More than 100 countries recognize Chess as a sport as well. Surprisingly, the UK is one of the countries not recognizing chess as a Sport.

    https://nextlevelchess.blog/is-ches...is recognized by,recognizing chess as a Sport.

So from playing Chess up to Aerobatics, sports

Did you ever notice that advertising during golfing events is geared toward the sort of people who need to hire international conglomerates and reinsurers?

To the other, the joke about golf is long known: Only the Scottish. Still, that doesn't explain anybody else. I mean, they also invented curling, but golf is golf. Curling, at the very least, makes sense.

American football is an actual war game, a kind of gladiator sport. Boxing and MMA are obvious in that aspect.

If you look back to notions like Olympic sport, these are activities that pertain in their way to warfare; they are virtuous performances reflective of societal need. And by the time we get around to the bit with stone skirts and tearing out people's hearts, again, look, the anthropology of sport is pretty apparent. As to audiences, people will gamble on anything, and a lot of the rest is conditioned belief and behavior. What do I care if some underdog manages to upset England in Cup play, or some such, but I'm an American, and that's enough to make it worth a muntz.

    Does it?

Speaking of the Scottish - Tossing the Caber. Not going to look at the rules, going to rely on memory

The aim is to have the tree trunk land on the other end and fall away landing as close to 90° as possible from its launch. Guessing points are deducted (no idea how many points are provided at the start) for how many degrees left or right the Caber deviates

    Who said Scots are odd?

    as/re #11
When I was a teenager in highschool(circa 1965), I worked nights and weekends for an electrician who was an ex county mounty. He sold me his 1957 ford interceptor---it took a bit of effort to get her running again after being set aside in a gravel parking lot for the better part of a decade---but once fired up, she could flat out scoot.
    ok
being a teenager- the default way of getting from point a to point be was with my right foot planted firmly on the floorboards
so one fine day while cruising the back roads of Wisconsin, I saw a light blue car following me---so, I punched it.
and slowly outpaced my pursuer---but not by much
Arriving at my mother's place and pulling into the driveway and parking the car
I saw the same light blue car pulling into the driveway
and It was my pastor, the right honorable pastor Reverend Robert Zinn
    so
I welcomed him and said---"You drive fast"
and he replied : "So do you."
and he was driving a Nash rambler
    .................................................
I was fortunate to have had that man of god in my life.

Previously, I would have said, imagine warehouse and shipping in icebound environs, and had presumed curling invented in Canada or Scandinavia, but decided to actually look it up and now stand corrected. Moreover, it seems related to shuffleboard, shove ha'penny, and bocce.

Something about mad dogs and Englishmen goes here, I guess. Then add the British Commonwealth.

Essentially, though, I think cricket is just the English equivalent of baseball, which could equally be called "stop and start" or "Jam sandwiches for Tea". Also, what passes for football in the United States seems to be very stop and start, compared to, say, Rugby or (especially) Australian Rules football, or soccer (the game that most of the world identifies as "football").

    Very useful diagram! Thank you.

Personally, I love fielding position names like "silly mid off". That one makes perfect sense. You have a fielder standing practically at point blank range from a man who is very likely to hit a hard red projectile in his direction very rapidly every now and then with a solid weapon made from willow, and the fielder's plan is to catch the projectile rather than getting the f**k out the way - all without wearing any protective equipment of note. "Silly" is the word!

The thing to understand about cricket as a spectator, I think, is the same thing you need to understand about baseball. It's not about the action of the game. It's far too slow and boring for that - only occasionally do you see spurts of interesting action. No, the point is to fill in your time with statistics. Who has the highest batting average? What's the bowler's strike-out rate or bowling average? Are the fielders in the best positions? And where's the psychological battle between bowler and batter at?
