See ... for quite a while at Sciforums I've wondered aloud in various tones of voice, with varying compassion and ferocity, complexity and simplicity, &c, &c, if there is any manner of establishing an objective anchor for ethics or morality. Of course this runs into certain problems as, in general, theists generally see God as the objective source of morality while atheists, at least at Sciforums, scream and run for the hills. A political and ethical version of the same, I admit, remains untried as a formal pursuit of mine, but I have yet to find a way around a number of subjective (pseudoreligious) barriers including nationalism and patriotism, partisanship (of which I'm guilty with the only twist being that I have no party), and, as can be expected anywhere in humanity, gross stupidity. While I won't be wholly alone--there are those who would find points of agreement in such an endeavor, the result would be the kind of vague, fluffy preaching to the choir that makes moderators violate their own terms.

In the end, people who assert right and wrong with no reasonable basis are becoming far too dangerous to the human species at all levels. I mean, the definitions of morality that people fight over are nothing more than localized codes of conventional wisdom.

What I wonder about your argument, though, is how it is that you come to answer the rhetorical with the assertion of a fiction, debunk the fiction, and then project your own circular argument elsewhere. I have to admit it was a cute attempt, though. Keep it up. You'll get the hang of it eventually.

Whence comes the fiction, and to what extraneous end would the vast majority of humanity subject itself to the fiction? Morality is symptomatic of human vulnerability in the face of nature's undeniable authority. Morality is a symptom of the reasons why we strive.

Classify people by their actions--e.g. hating--as opposed to stupid reasons like the color of their skin or how bad a mood you're in. I don't care how much money someone does or doesn't have. The question is can we treat each other decently or does proximity mean that person wants a fight? As Slim pointed out, "Not all Geeks wear Glasses". However, it is fair to say that all Haters hate. Hating is a major prerequisite to being a hater. Philately is not.

After all, if your position regarding hatred is a moral one - what informs it?

I think it would be more accurate to subsequently say: Morality is symptomatic of human lack of undeniable authority in the face of decisions requiring unbiased and universally sound judgement.

I would qualify "nature" as specifically "human nature" - nature itself presents its own unqualifiable moral crises - "cruelty against animals" by animal or human standards? True, our moral problems are destinct from nature - but I don't think they are necessarily antagonistic to it.

The root of the problem seems to me an identity crisis: are we animals with "human" qualities, or humans with animal qualities?
