For this question, we will call our main character- Alisha.

Alisha is a young woman, 18 to be exact; a very beautiful individual- as far as aesthetic quality goes.
Someone in her family dies, and out of respect- she goes to their funeral to see this family member one last time.

While at the service, she meets this man- tall dark handsome, and mysterious. During their brief meeting, she falls in complete and utter love with him- and becomes so immersed in his beauty and mystery, that she creates her own mystery- by forgetting to introduce herself and ask him for his name.
She realizes this on the way home.

Three weeks later, Alisha murders her sister. What is her motive?

I’ll answer my own question, as soon as the reply’s hit ten- this is an actual question from an old psychological profile technique.

I have another question, a man (who we’ll call bob) is found hanging from the 3 story ceiling of a gymnasium. It’s a suicide case- odd thing is, our friend bob is hanging by a 2 foot piece of rope that’s tied to an eye-hook that’s attached to the ceiling. There’s nothing in the gym, aside from a hammer, two nails- and a puddle of water; all of which are directly below bob.

    How did he hang himself?

This one’s not so much of a profiler as the first, just a brain teaser I learned in grade school.

Second one... it was raining outside and the only way the guy could hang himself was to go outside, get on the roof and use the hammer to get into the gym (made hole in the roof). He then tied the rope (nails.. whatever) then hung himself. The puddle of water come from it raining outside and water coming in. When the people get there to discover his body, it stopped raining.

Second one -- stood on an ice cube, which melted...now it's a puddle of water.

First one -- hopes that this man will attend her sister's funeral.

THe second one- he stood on a block of ice (a tall block) to hang himself- it melted and left a puddle

It must have been a big ice cube but it's logical except for the 2 nails and a hammer. It's unlikely that nails were used to attach the eye-hook to the ceiling. The weight of the body would have definetly pulled out the nails (unless the nails were hammered at an extreme angle). Screws (and a screwdriver) would have probably done the job. bolts and nuts would have been the best.

I haven't read the other replies so that I can give you my real answers.

    1. She murders her sister so she might see the man at her sister's funeral.

    2. He was standing on a giant ice cube. I have no clue how he got an ice cube into a gym.

Ice cube .. It could have been many smaller ice cubes. This makes more sense because if he had 1 big ice cube, how did he climb the ice cube? Maybe he used the hammer to chissel stairs.

She killed her sister in hopes that the mystery man might attend the funeral.
but this is purly speculation and their is not enugh proof to judge anything...

the answer to you question "How did he hang himself?" is, of course, with the rope.
now the hard question would be "how did he get there to hang himself in the first place?"

1 - Hoping the stranger will come to the funeral.

2 - The block of ice just doesn't cut it...
If he climbed a block of ice:
a.) How would he get a block of ice that large into the gymnasium?
b.) He was hung from a rope tied to an eye-hook. What were the hammer and nails for?
c.) A block of ice that large (3-stories) would create a lot more water than a puddle directly below him.

It has to be something else.

No, its not. These two riddles are ripped straight off the internet.

Its mighty hard nowadays to tease the brain with the internet taking its place.

the only thing i might add is that he might have cracked the giant ice cube witht hte hammer and nails. I don't see that as very likely, but...

Then what is the purpose of the hammer and nails?
How was the gym not flooded with all that water?
How did he get the block of ice in there?

If the answer is that simple and no further explanation is offered, then it is a dumb riddle, in my opinion.

It was brilliant before the person here decided to embellish on it.

Something tells me so and so read it on the internet somehwere, it sat around for a while and PRESTO he confabulated so many things that by the time its posted it sounds as cryptic as God does.

but isnt that what makes a reeaaly good riddle?
sounding so complex, yet being so simple so when you hear it you think "omg! how was i so stupid!?"

    Yes and No.

Sounding more complex than it is using trickery with words and scenarios and such is one thing.

Throwing pointless crap in (such as adding a hammer and two nails) when it has absolutely nothing to do with the riddle (if, in fact gendanken is correct in assuming this is the same old ice-block riddle) does not make a good riddle.

An impossible solution (such as a 3 story block of ice melting into a puddle on the floor) makes a horrible riddle.

.. and let's not forget about the conveniently placed eye-hook on the ceiling. It's a terrible riddle because there's not much to solve (except for the puddle).

First off, IMHO a good riddle is defined by how deep it forces the mind to go- in this case it did a pretty good job.

To be stricly honest, I know the question is butchered- rather, the second one- but that's how i received it from my teacher in 6th grade.(also, that was a long time ago) Neither questions are from the internet, both are from books- and yes it was an 'ice tower'(for lack of better term).
I never stated what kind of gymn, nor the door size- also the 'ice tower' could have been built with multiple blocks. In this case though, the gym scenario was for lack of better place.
You had to think about it, though- didn't you? Simply because the riddle was a bit different from what you had heard- even if you rationalized the difference through criticsm. (Excuse my bad grammar for the moment)
The hammer could have been used to make an entrace big enough- and further secure the eyehook, as well as a chizzle, where as the nails could have provided 'steps' in the ice block. One after another, or they could've been wedged in the soles of his shoes.

Doors are holes in walls, and how long he had been there was never stated. Water evaporates, AND goes through doors! =P amazeing.

Everything is logical, minus the out-of-porportion story.
Complex minds pick it apart, simple minds come up with practical solutions- that are essentially correct.
Neither are completey wrong, and neither can be disputed as bad.

As for the first question- from what my friend read me out of her book, it's an old question profilers would ask convicts.
It was to determine if they thought like a 'serial killer', i don't much agree with the method- but it's interesting to say the least.
Some 85% of convicted serial killers answered *drum roll* 'She killed her sister, in hopes the man would attend the family funeral'. Crazy, no?

    As for you that answered 'correctly' (we seem to have alot of serial killers around here... :bugeye: ), nice to meet you and good by. ^^;
Nah, I answered the same- it's the only logical answer. (The 'dateing her sister' seems good enough, but I didn't think the guy would want to be with her, if he was dateing her sister and she just up and died.)

By the way, here's another one for ya'; Why must people always find the wrong, with good spirited questions? Why can't they let other people enjoy trying to answer them- even if aforementioned 'person' has already read said question, and see's this one is a little different? What's wrong with trying to help people experience new thoughts, or maybe just give them a few new riddles to ask their peers? One more, Am I in the wrong for posting a few 'thoughts' on questions, in a free thoughts forum?

Jesus christ, if you don't agree- provide constructive critcism, correct my spelling or grammar, or something along those menial lines. And if you feel the need to state your opinions on how I wrote the question wrong, or how you think I picked it up from some third rate source- or how you beleive it's not 'teasing' enough because you've heard it all before or because your better than that , atleast PM me or hold your tounge until people are done having their fun- and get the answer's that I have. Also, if you have a different answer- WAIT FOR ME TO POST MINE, as it's questions I asked; and i beleive people would like to read them first, otherwise they wouldn't of posted on my freakin' thread! >.<

    thank you =D

Now that what I have on these questions is up, put what you have- I always love hearing the alternate version to anything, as it broadens my opinions, but only if it's AT THE RIGHT TIME.

note: (POST ANY OF YOUR OWN UP! Like I said, I love a good challenge.)

For the more 'astute' of mind, here's a better riddle- from the same book, mind you.

It concernes another death, (in the book this is the section where you imagine you're a 'detective') there's a man lieing face down on a road next to an old barn. Dead, ofcrouse- with no lacerations, nor puncture wounds-nothing out of the ordinary on his back at all. He's wearing a windbreaker suit and a backpack- the only sign of damage to his body would be the bruises on his frontside.

Ok, so it doesn't seem so hard anymore- but that's only because I added the details for you, normally you would have to ask. See if you can figure out how he died, after the first correct answer, I'll reply. Unless you need more details. But I doubt it. =P

I'm scouring my mind for something the cirtical thinkers, with their sharp tounges- would enjoy. I've never been one for memorizeing riddles (although I love a good challenge), I just thought someone might get a kick out of what I found written on some math work from grade school, that I happend across a night or so ago- when rumageing through old memories.

    Oh, and here's another one!

(odd details, I know, but bare with me for the first part)
Walking through the woods after a good meal at the stream, you're caught off-guard by a shadow-clad figure that blocks your path. "Answer my riddle, or become my dinner" A deep seemingly disembodied voice, echo's through yoru mind- "Your dinner? What makes you think you could overcome me?" you confidently reply, while trying to convince yourself of the bold statement. T
hrough the shadows a sphynx as broad as an eon aged oak emerges- once again supplying your mind with words, this time piercing your soul with his burning eyes "Answer wrong, and I assure you- there will be no more light in your life:: What walks on four legs amidst the dawn, two when the sun destroys your shadow- three within dusk, and none just before the bell tolls midnight".

    Will you serve as dinner?

...Ok, so in essence the riddle is rather short- but the rest came with it (probably butchered again, as that's the best I remember it), or that's how I heard it from a friend- sometime ago.
