just got my SAT scores about 10 minutes ago:

    verbal: 560
    math: 530

is a total of 1090 good? i mean, for taking it in jr. high (8th grade)? i ranked at about the 62nd percentile of college bound seniors. should i be happy?

Ahh yes, the Duke thing. It's not bad. The strange thing is that most people I knew, dropped when they first took the real SAT. Shoot for at least a 1300. I stopped at a 1410 simply because all I could afford was State School, and that got me in easy. Also, remember to take the ACT - scores of over 30 are looked at favorably.

Well in 6th grade I took the SAT's and I earned a total of 1000 490 math 410 verbal. Is that reasonable? Well I'm in 8th grade now and considering two of my friends got scores of 1450 and 1500 I think that either i did really bad or are they just extremely smart. ( my friends are takin senior classes right now...)

I didn't realize they let people that young take the SATs. But anyway, why would you want to?

Try to be as happy as you want to be. Don't let test scores bring you down for there's always people around you that will score higher and lower. Just do your best on them and go from there.

Wild. I also scored 1090, twelve years ago. 510/580, which was strange because I was a horrible math student.

It is, incidentally, why I don't like standardized testing. My verbal score flattened me, and over my time in college I discovered that most of the people I knew who scored higher on their verbal had some difficulties writing papers. Hell, I wrote papers for former honors students who scored 600 on their verbals but couldn't tell a style sheet from used toilet paper. (By the way ... on that last note--seriously, don't date in college. You know how people do stupid things for the people they're in love with? Yeah. Try blowing a final because you were writing your girlfriend's and her best friend's papers for two classes you aren't even taking. I got my best grades in classes I never enrolled in or attended. Strange, eh?)

i don't know. maybe it had something to do with the magnet program. anyway, he got this stupid honor thing for getting such a high score. there was a ceremony and stuff. i was too young to pay attention.

1070...both times. Dumb as a rock people and apathetic towards the test as a lazy ass can be that I am.

I took the thing a few months back.

    I got...

    780 in Verbal
    620 in Math

As you can tell, I know something about my language, but my deductive reasoning = zilch...

I'm taking it again in a few weeks, just so I can raise that math score.
I know it's all well and good for a state school, but I'm hunting bigger game, and a 620 just isn't going to cut it, especially in the "logic" department.

What is this arithmetic of which you speak, oh pernicious test?

Anyone got any suggestions as to what I should be studying?

I took the SATs in 7th grade and scored a 1150, my math score was considerably high, while my verbal was "horrible." Then I recently took the SATs in 11th grade and scored a 1260. My verbal, this time, was excellent while my math score was lacking considerably.

If you score well in 8th grade, don't think you'll score significantly better in high school. If you are worried about your SAT score holding you back from getting into a college/university that you really want to get into, then I suggest take a SAT prep course. They cost a lot of money, but they really do help you understand how the SAT works. I'm in the middle of one of these courses.

SATs don't mean shit with regards to intelligence. They are just a tool that makes denying people from a college easier for the college admissions department. If you are a puzzle type person and/or have the money to spend to go to a SAT prep course, you'll have a major advantage over other kids. If your school's ciricumlum is marginally based around preparing you for tests like the SAT, you'll score better too.

Too bad, for you, Nivao, you'll have to take the "new" SAT with an essay and reconfigured math section. Those open ended standardized tests are horrible to take, especially when so much is riding on the test score.

I never took the SAT but if I trust the IQ-SAT conversion, I would get close
    to 1340. I love Canada ;-)

You would want to take them early so that you could prepare yourself. So now, when I take trig in the fall, I'll learn what was on the SAT and go "oh yeah, so that's what that is!" And then pay attention because I'll know that I'll need it and do better when it counts.

Also, if my scores ARE good for my age I might be able to talk my parents into letting me go to the Illinois Science and Math Academy.

I took the test in January.
Got 760 in verbal and 610 in maths.
    Maths haunts me yet again.

I also took them in January, and I got a 700 in Math, and 600 in Verbal.

so 1300 is pretty good I guess. I am looking going to try and raise my verbal though.

Maybe I just don't see the point. To me it would seem like a book on the SATs would be more helpful, as you can actually keep it... not rely on what you remember being on it.
