    StarTrek........?

    hey all
just a curiosity of mine to ponder on the benevolence of StarTrek
and the insuing question of true representation of demographic
    Creeds and cultures.
The global figure is said to be, 10% of society is homosexual.
Yet there is none in any StarTrek episodes or movies that i have seen!
is this because it is seen as an illness treatable by gene and hormone therapy?(ref brain fluid analysis)
is it a small "selected" window of an elitist group?
hence no abnormalities in mental or physical stuff?

    PLEASE... no bigoted responses!(hetro-phobics included)

I think it would be hard to write into a Star Trek script. Whenever homosexuality is included in TV or Movies it is usually to deal with that issue or leave it open for another episode. In Star Treks case that may not be applicable. Star Trek relies on evolutionary causes for human and alien life. Having a race of homosexuals would impede on that life.

I guess its a sci fi thing. I personally just think that having homosexualism wouldn't fit into the Star Trek universe. Its just not what its about. Its about inter-racial relationships and diplomacy and ships and stuff. And please don't tell me that homosexualism is a race because if it is it would only survive a generation and would rely on converts. Thus if its genetic there would only be one generation or if they had children previously an ever decreasing number.

    Why do you care?

    Dear Oxymoron earthling,

What percentage of the society are you? Who cares!

Startrek is about the exploration of space, not the exploration of another guys asshole!

You are in the wrong place! Go to any search engine and type, "peter puffer", ect......

Surely you can manage a gay fantasy with a techno flare.

    You make me sick!

No homosexuality in Star Trek. That means it has got to be the only programme on TV that is good for kids.
I hope they never even consider the idea.

    LOL

i have heard it said that startrek is an educational format influenced by ETs!
i find this idea very fascinating as to which area of society is being addressed.
    hhhmmm... food for thought.

well if we are talking about space exploration it would be understandable
that bi- or homo sexual people would need to be weeded out.
it would only attribute more problems in a colonisation format.
although there is no reply so far to the disabled refference
i can feel the phobic backlash of repression blazing like a
sword wheelded by a knight or the "nuke the gay whales for jesus" triangle table.

I DO NOT WANT TO OFFER MYSELF AS A TARGET for point scoring
zealots so i will keep my inner thoughts to myself but i only hope we get a response from someone from the writing room.
i find the social implications of "dax" to be very interesting.....
inspite of her being a sexy gal in the current series running on our network

ONE MORE QUESTION...... based on the current run of events(terrorists) has the startrek series's addressed the issue of religiouse incompatability yet?

I think I might have seen a creature in a episode that was suppose to be Asexual if that's any help

You might have noticed also in the programs, Where are the criminals that supply drugs, and the drug users? And do you ever see anyone begging for money? (Of course they mention some method they used where the federation was created and it meant people worked for it and got paid for existing or something like that)

They've managed to keep illnesses within it, so at least they haven't made out all is cured?

On top of that, all those that could have a relationship with Daxx in Deep Space 9 are contemplaiting sleeping with a symbiont that use to live in a man, which mean Daxx must be gay.

I would mention other things but I'm sure they would have a better heading... By the way I'm hetrosexual

ST was never meant to be the vehicle to address all of societies problems. It was meant to be a sci-fi series. On prime time in the sixties when such was not mentioned. Being as it was prime time that meant the kiddies could watch.

What ST did was paint a general picture for back ground and was amazingly complete for the time. Especially when considering that the networks handled it. With censors breathing down their backs, no less. Now they did get off into things that were not considered proper for the time but it was always disguised as something else and the viewer had to determine just what it was that was being addressed as it could never just come out and say what it was or it would never make it by the censor.

The other thing that amazes me about it is that after all this time people are still looking for solutions within its contents and context. It was never meant to be what it has been blown up to. It was only a tv show. Another cowboy and indian story with space ships instead of horses.

This can be said with all Science fiction, of course some Science fiction comes from science fact, while other science fiction actually starts a whole new chain of sciences fact.

I wish I could just quote some science facts that have come from science fiction.... well other than transplants (Frankenstein), CCTV (1984), Artificial Intelligence (2001).

Others have just had a prefound effect, like the first radio version of "War of the Worlds" with H.G.Wells, and it seems that UFOlogy has stayed as a subculture ever since.

Ripleofdeath, it looks like you have struck a very big nerve.

hehe, I have been told that there are two things you should never discuss in public. They are Religion and Politics.

But with all the responses in this forum it seems that there is one more to add.

    Religion, Politics and homosexuality.

whats up with this gay issue??!
whatdoes it matter if there are gays there or not?]
    no1 has sex there anyway.

did u ever see muslems? jews? budaists? hinudes or whatever on STNG,DS9,VOYAGER ?
it does not really matter with all those Aliens around.

only in bab5 and that too in one of the early episodes there is this thing about religons and in the end he intreduces the alien(4got if it was a centauri or menbari or whatever) to all the religions of earth and there are people in the religius dressing of any religon on earth.

and also ivanova's father is a jew

religions are not that interestng in those sci-fi progs and as u can see in the later episodes no such stuff is addressed while the religions of other alien races are widely spread to the viewer with more info (both in b5 and in st universe)

it is kinda like the old ST when they had a russion, and a japanese/chinease(what was he?) while the cold war raged in the world.

    hey all

well as i think more holistically on the issue it seems maybe too apparent that these issues may in themselves be the nature to what is deemed personal and not to be discussed as the nature of there existence in the programs.

I TOO THINK it is not a public topic of conversation as to what type of sex a person chooses to engage in but it seems that i along with a few others are in the minority.

    Politics religion and sex...
The core issues of what is society... but as deadwood says
the very things one should not discuss incase someone likes to be nasty to others and does not want to admit it!

Ripleof death you made me mad!

Jim Kirk was never a queer! Nor was spock or
    Mc Coy!

You must be very young and don't yet know what is is like to find and have real friends in this world. Son, don't mistake the love between soulful brothers with homosexuality!

As a writer of many articles, good and bad, there are some writings that are sacreligious to comment on, in the ways that you have proposed. I have read a few about queers in Starfleet, over the years.

After the first publication of the book, StarTrek, "The Motion Picture", there was a passage written about how there was NO Vulcan word for friend. The only words that came close were "brother", or "lover". God, you can imagine the uproar of the "alternate lifestyles" bunch at the time. Roddenbury & companie(s) used that in the same way that the closest Russian term at the time was "Comrad". It makes a mad as a wet hen when the perverts claim that Kirk and Spock were queers!

The emotions between Kirk & Spock & Mc Coy were a hell of a lot like the bond that develops between police officer partners. Cops may spend so much time watching out for their partners, that they really are closer than to their own wives. It doesn't mean that they are queers, ripleofdeath, it just means that they are forced to trust each other for survival. FYI: Gene Roddenbury was a cop before he was a writer. It just makes me ill when the queers try to equate homoSEXuality with a very rare kind of friendship. And it really makes me mad when a couple of like minded souls cannot be friends and have a few beers together, without the freaks of today saying that they are a "couple!"

Queers aren't born, they are recruited! Whether by insufficient parental upbringing, or by later peer induced crowds.

Count yourself lucky to find a good woman, ripleofdeath. And count yourself even more lucky to find "brothers" who will watch your back and help you in times of need. If you can everbe considered a real man, then you will be as reliable. Just don't go down the roaqd of the scourges of queers, many as they are.

StarTrek was originally written as a forward looking fantasy of human possibilties and technology. It was never written as a forum for alternative lifestyes. It makes me sick to think that children might be subjected to a 21st century indoctrination of such alternative lifestyles. I know that my children weren't born homosexual, and god willing they won't come to believe that they are because of the present day tolerant attitude, that is a thinly disguised veil of indoctrination for those that have become hopelessly perverted.

Get your head straight, Ripleofdeath. Maybe a little Old Time Gospel Religion might-not-be-such-a-bad-thing-for-you. You could do a lot worse than to be a Christian!

Just don't keep on swaying the younger audience here with the disgusting homosexual argument!

i can feel your fear for your children like a broken limb!
stay strong for them and protect them from evil as much as biggoted psychology!

any religion is only as good as the teacher!

I understand what you mention in regard to the close bond of
men and share your anguish on the constant homophobic response that reduces the "melding of minds" to a sexual encounter.
you touch so heavily on the subject of psychological polution of the mind without refering directly to it.

you do make an interesting point about friends!...
to what do you judge your own?
    by what they do
or by what they say they would have done?
when do you judge them to be this great thing called friend?
MAYBE... just MAYBE... they might just be nice people,
who you are getting to know!...?

A TRUE FRIEND IS A NICE (good at heart) PERSON
WHO IS AROUND FOR A TIME IN WHICH YOU MAY LEARN OF THEIR
LIKES AND DISLIKES, while sharing enjoyment in a mutual fashion.

    peace and light

Ed Anger , are you gay?

actualy it is now belived that some cases of being gay are due to ones DNA.

are you sure that you are not gay? {not that there is something wrong with it} studies also claim the ones that are most homophobic are actualy gays and are ashamed of it.

i for an instance do not care
<B>hey the more gays there are out there means more girls for me.</B>

hmm yhe right with all those girls in the short skirts

    and kirk going on as landing party to every fu_cking planet they reach and faces amazons{must resist atomizing disruppter ray and do the leader}
yhe right kirk is gay (dude no1 ever claimed kirk and spock were gays)

hmm maybe he is the one from the villige people??!?

one must be very crazy to come up with something as stupid as the ANDROMEDA(it is like the power rangers meet xena with a plot more stupid)

You never know with those "homersexuals", they might have found a way to escape from the TV into your living room, just because they are so sex-crazed that nothing can stop them!

Sounds like a homer-sexual nightmare for the X Files being as Star Trek no longer is made. I guess we'll have to enlist the super hero's for this one. Where is Mel Gibson and Steven Segal when you need them? (probably being fitted for bandaids over the booty at the doctors office)

Stryder is correct. There was an episode that dealt directly with homosexuality (though using the traditional scifi mechanism of twisting the situation around sufficiently such that social commentary can be made without necessitating blinding introspection).

This was a TNG episode where there was an entire planet of monosexuals (not asexual, because they still needed to have sex) with a single gender. Cmdr. Riker (with his compelling masculinity, I guess) falls in love & is fallen in love with by one of the monosexuals. It (?) tells Riker that though the species is strictly monosexual, there are instances of tendency towards gender. The society looks down upon these instances and considers them to be medical illnesses that need to be treated. Riker is outraged ... etc. eventually she/it is treated and no longer finds Riker attractive ... probably a monologue about sexual freedoms ... roll credits.
