    Congrats, Scaperzrule!

Cool quiz, I would have got about half.

(and the moon was not blown to bits in Space 1999. It was thrown out of orbit and was more or less fully intact roaming through space).

I'm curious to know where this answer comes from. There are only three ways I could think of to get this Information. 1 the phone number in the trace in the beginning of the first movie (Actualy I didnt pay attention, maybe they didnt show a whole area code) 2. Towards the end of the first movie the intersection of two streets are named, but that seems sort of generic. 3. An outside source that is still official to the movie.

I have a source of type #3 which implys that the city was in "Redland Washington"

    http://www.metacortechs.com

Keep in mind, Metacortechs is the software company that Neo works for, as signifyed by a several second shot of the exterior of his workplace.

If you go to thier main page, then use the "Directory" link at the bottom, you get a map of the world with red pips on it. The only red pip that takes you somewhere is in "Redland" which appears to be in washington state.

Type in the employee name "AndersonThomas" (Neo's real name) and the site tells you

Now this is all part of some large internet promotion for the movies, there are many sites that can be reached that are all part of the promotion, but all are flash based and I havnt had the time to sit loading it all and trying to get the big picture of how they are all connected, but to me this seems like evedence that the city in the matrix is Redland Washington. I have no information as to why it would be Chicago.

Chicago? That' is some seriously fucked up shit. Why in God's name would it be Chicago? I mean to begin with, It even looks like Sydney, it's not like they filmed Sydney to look like Chicago or anything, it was quite distinctly Sydney (Unless Mulpha owns a building in Chicago that I'm not aware of). Is it supposed to be Chicago in Reloaded and Revolutions as well? That just really doesn't add up to me. Why the hell would the merilvingian own a European castle in the . . . mountains of Illinois?

Also I know that in the Enter the Matrix, the video game that takes place before Reloaded, you get chased out of the merilvingian’s mansion and race through an underground highway system, and the only place in the world that I could think that’s supposed to be is in Boston with it’s “Big dig”.

Yeah, so basicaly what I'm wondering is where the heck did you get Chicago from?

I didn't know it was Chicago, but I have since searched the web and found loads of trivia sites saying that it was Chicago for various reasons that mean nothing to me. (I've never been to Chicago)

"All of the references to street corners (e.g. Wells and Lake) are real intersections in Chicago, USA, the Wachowski brothers' hometown. The subway train has signs for "Loop," another Chicago reference. The film however is quite obviously not set in Chicago or any other real city (though it was filmed in Sydney)." www.matrixunplugged.net/matrix.php?page=trivia

(I suspect these people either have the same book, or have got it from each others websites)

Despite its popularity on the internet, I would have to call the assertion that it is in Chicago a little suspect. It seems clear from the movies themselves that its just supposed to be a generic city, plus there are sources like mine that are official parts of the franchise that seem to say it was in washington. Although I'll grant that my source probably should not be trusted. I doubt the Wachouski(sp?) brothers ever wrote what city it was supposed to be, and the developer in charge of that metacortechs website project, was probably parodying Microsoft by setting its headquarters in washington, without thinking that that would require the city in the matrix to be there too.

Actually, it is Chicago. The hotel in first the few scenes of the movie, is called "Heart O' The City Hotel", which is an actual hotel in Chicago. It was filmed in Sydney, AU, and was suppose to look like Chicago, IL, because it's suppose to look generic.

The real hotel is called "Heart O' Chicago Hotel". There are also "Heart O' Town" hotels in Reno and Charleston and a chain of "Heart O' Texas" hotels. So I wouldn't put much weight to that.

Considering the non-descriptive nature of the name of the Hotel (rather than actually being named "Heart O' Chicago",) and the same for the telephone directories and subway signs (Just labeled "City"), I don't think that it was meant to be any real city.

Include this with the fact that Chicago doesn't have a subway.

I think the street names and such were just homages to their home town.

Actually, it's not suppose to be Chicago or any city, so you really are correct. In order to achieve this effect though, they had to make it take place somewhere, which is in Sydney, and they tried to give it a Chicago-ish feel. That way the city would appear to be generic.

    And I'm un-sticking this thread.

Chicago-ish feel? But it wasn't packed with fat people who have awful midwestern accents.
