Yet all major scientific discoveries have been made by western, secular based countries and mainly by atheist scientists.

Any religious based science (that is probably an oxymoron) can never achieve objectivity since the idea will always prevail that in the end "god did it". With that outlook Islamic science will never amount to anything worthwhile.

Now I don't mind being corrected here but my search didn't discover any notable scientific articles or papers published by Muslims.

You talk of an advanced scientific culture yet the people in Islamic countries are among the poorest, unheathiest, and worst educated in the world. Despite many being oil rich such wealth appears to have been squandered on a corrupt small upper class.

Science - meaning knowledge - does not seem to have been used to benefit Islamic peoples.

What then is the value of this claim of 'advanced scientific culture' if the knowledge is not used? In reality the claim appears to be simply grandiose with no significant underlying basis.

"At the time the Arab society was in a state of complete degeneration, chaos and ignorance. They were a barbarous people who worshipped idols of their own making, believed warfare and bloodshed to be virtuous and were even capable of killing their own children."

    Yeah, the '80s really sucked.

It's easy to sit back and twist religious dogma to conform to practically anything that suits the purpose.

For example, in the Qur'an, God encourages the science of astronomy:

He who created the seven heavens in layers. You will not find any flaw in the creation of the All-Merciful. Look again-do you see any gaps? (Qur'an, 67: 3)

I see nothing to do with astronomy. Instead, I see creationism.

And of course, the more we study astronomy, the more we understand creationism to be pure bunk.

That's because religious dogma has paralyzed his capacity for critical thinking.

yeah and then Islam came in and made those great advancements in science, astronomy, medicine, personal hygenie etc. they did this in the same period that the western world was in the dark ages and in severe poverty. (later they made crusades to gain wealth from the Muslim empire)

I'm just teasing you, preacher, I acknowledge the scientific contributions that people (who also happened to be muslim), have made in the past. I feel these are contributions of individuals that did their best to advance knowledge in spite of the limitations placed upon them by religious authorities.

I have not seen the first post in this thread, but I will tell you that in Islam, it is obligatory to seek knowledge. That is why Muslims excelled in every aspect of education at one time. Great advancements were made in medicine, astrology(which btw caused the founding of the New World), science, and math.

Much of the stuff around us today can be traced back to Muslim idea. The idea of a university, the academic cap and gown, the variable x in math, etc.

The Arabic Numerals and Algebra both predates Islam. It is the heritage of the non-muslim arab people, not of muslim arabs.

Nothing there says that muslims invented algebra and arab decimal numbering system.

And dont be so hot. I do acknowledge that many technologies was invented or developed by muslims in the dark ages.
