I'm selling my laptop online for more than it is really worth. I knew that there are a lot of dunb people online. The thing about the laptop that, I guess, makes it more valuble is how much illegal software is on it. I have Flash MX, Corel Office, Microsoft Office, Photoshop, Carmageddon, GTA and a hell of a lot more illegal software.

I did mention thin in my advertisment. Are there operations where authorities bust people for selling computers with illegal software on it?

I posted my ad on www.intoko.ca

The emails that he sent me look like this:

1st email: "hello, saw your ad about you want to sell your laptop for $2600 , if u stil have it let me know."

2nd email (after I sent him a few details): "hello ,sorry been busy at work.i will like some pictures if you have some.i will have my client issue you a cheque which would include the shipping costs as i stay in spain and will need to have my shippers come for the pickup when payment has been confirmed by you. get back to me with your full name ,mailing information and telephone number so that the cheque wil get to you as soon as possible.

    thank you."

Could the spelling errors be intentional to make it seem like he is not busting me?

He mentioned that he was in Spain, so I'm assuming that English might not be his first language.

Am I just being paranoid or do you think this guy could try to bust my software?

Make sure to hang on to the laptop until the check clears. And if they send you too much money don't send the excess back to them until the check clears. This is an old scam that people are getting popped with left and right. The bank will tell you that the money is there and blah blah. But, when the check ends up bouncing it's you that pays despite their assurances.

Don't really see any spelling errors. I think cheque is how they spell it in some places.

Don't know about the illegal software issue.

I doubt you'll have a problem, that is, unless you're selling a couple hundred laptops at a time. Maybe some security agency will get lucky and randomly encounter your scam but I doubt it.

Still, I don't really even know what I'm talking about so don't listen to me.

    cheque is spelled "cheque"

check - find out, make sure
czech - someone from the czech replublic
cheque - an assurance of money to be transferred by the bank

ok, i was ranting aimlessly but just thought id point that out

as for illegal software, you should see how much i have distributed, if i was doing it online i would get busted 100 times over
they go for the big fish like me not 1 guy selling a computer that by chance has some illegal software, i would only be worried if the cheque came from a govt agency

Nope. Check is spelled check. And it has several meanings. One of which is a bank note.

In canada, it is spelled cheque...

It could be wrong because I live in a Frech area and the "que" is from the French language. It could be one of those Canadian vs American spelling things.

Anyway, It looks like the transaction might work! Yay! Not I can get an even better laptop... Hove you guys seen this laptop? http://global.acer.com/products/notebook/fr3200.htm

It's loaded! since I have been saving my $$, I can get my profit from selling my laptop and add a few hundred to get a speedy machine. I am also thinking about getting a cheap Tablet PC and a sweet desktop for gaming.

Q: Why leave it with the software on?

A usually suggestion when selling computers on is to either completely reformat (shred) the harddrive and reinstall an OS (A bought one), or just clean it and make sure theres instructions on how to install an OS OEM, or perhaps not even bother with the OS.

This deals with any concerns you have about illegal software.

(Note: A friend of mine has bought alot and sold alot of "copied" things on Ebay, the only reason he did it was purely because he got conned with a purchase. However it seems if the program/music works in a persons machine they rarely complain, although it's actually a breach of copyright laws and the TOC of Ebay, but it goes to show how regularly the authorities are out looking for this sort of activity.)

THe problem is that I advertized the laptop with all the illegal software on it. I made it clear in the Ad that there were no CDs for my programs. I am going to transfer all of my personal stuff and my programs to an external hard drive. I'll also edit the user screen to erase my name.

    Eeek,

My deal with that one guy might have fleen through. Someone else is interested. The problem now is that they live in NIGERIA! THey said they would pay shipping. SHipping to there costs about $300 via courrier. I'll be surprised if I actually receive a legit cheque or money order. I was told to watch out for deals from poor countries.

cash the check wait tell it clears all you can really do. But think of it like this the cost of a PC in england is a good one is 1700-3000 pounds. The same amount as in the USA in dollers but a pound is worth 1.68-2 dollers so really it cost 3400-9000 dollers USA so as you can see they save money.
