11 MPs are moving to impeach Tony Blair for taking Britain to war in Iraq. As the occupation turns uglier still, this may bring a new debate into Commons over the justifications, or lack therof, for this morass. I'm curious to hear from British if this anger is likely to actually accomplish anything.

I am often jealous as an American of the noticeably more open and responsive debate within British Parliament, in comparison with that of American Congress. So I'll be wistfully watching, if an impeachment debate does ensue, and cheering for the triumph of truth and democracy.

We dont have "impeachment" in the UK. You can have a vote of no confidence within the Party i think, but i dont think there is any way to remove a PM. The United Kingdom is an elective dictatorship, you see.

Had impeachment: that's how they got Strafford and Laud. I think Warren Hastings, more than two hundred years ago, was the last one impeached, by Burke. He got off.

The problem is that if Blair is impeached, then the people who voted in favour for war would admit that they were wrong. That doesn’t bode well in the elections does it?

The last impeachment in the H o C was Palmerston in 1847.

    Hey Hypewaders,

I know what you mean, I was watching cspan the eve of invasion and Parliment was having lively debate on the subject, later the Senate was droning on a bill that I can't remember what of. One of the Dems (Byrd I think) Used his 2 min. to talk about the implications of the war and he mentioned the heated debate in parliment, he ended saying shame on congress.

I haven't heard of this impeachment talk. I took a 2 wk hiatus from Olympic TV. I hope they impeach him, condemn the invasion, bring their troops home, send Blair and hawks to the Haque. Same goes with Bush.
