The world may be laughing right now but this isn't really funny.
Is this really the very best reason the authorities can come up with and since when did Americans need permission to go to the park?
I presume that Iraq and Afganistan are also privvy to the global news feeds. I wonder how this sorry tale is playing over there?

Anybody care to defend this action?

Environmentalism comes back to bite the environmentalists in the ass. Funny.

So what if they can't demonstrate in Central Park? They can demonstrate elsewhere. There are plenty of streets in New York.

Chalk another one up for Dee Cee's Disingenuous-O-Mat.

    Shame.
I off to the park for a bit of fresh air Eng.
You can come along if you want nobody here will stop you.

BTW Is there a back story to this central park grass thing?
Has walking on the grass been an issue before or has it only arisen recently?

    Anybody?

I don't think the point is that the people can demonstrate elsewhere, I think it's that they shouldn't have to.
You seem to have quite a talent for missing the point of what someone is saying.

    Onwards!

Well it seems that at least part of the park has had a little cash spent on it.

Perhaps the city fathers are keen to preserve a ten year old investment - at a price.

But when it comes to large numbers of people trampling the grass there does seem to be a precedent (or two) since 1998

I can only presume that fans of 'popular and world music' are far less likely to damage the grass than those with anti Republican views.
    Perhaps it's their footwear.

Only if you promise not to hate me for it.

I don't really see an issue with this specifically. Cities and communities do this sort of thing all the time when issuing permits for public events, which is something a protest falls under.

Obviously there is the chance that this sort of thing can be abused to further a hidden agenda, in this case, marginalizing the effectiveness of the protests. The moment you can convince me that's happening, I'll be the first one to call bullshit on the OMG THE GRASS OH NOS! line of reasoning.

But I think it's a bit too early to break out the tinfoil hats on this one though. I can appreciate your cynicism, because I have a fair amount of it myself.

The back story is a half million feet doing millions of dollars worth of damage to public property, that property being Central Park, when those feet can do the same thing - protest - at a place where they aren't going to do millions of dollars worth of damage to public property.

They have placed restrictions on the park in the past more than once.
    Not just for demonstrators, either.
They killed Shakespeare in the Park more than once specifically because it was eroding the soil.
It dates back to the fifties, at least.
Why does everything have to be a political conspiracy?
I am no where near a Bush supporter, but this has nothing to do with Bush.
If it were political they would have killed all of the other demonstrations that involve over 100,000 people (some estimates at over 200,000) planned for this week.

It's funny to me that most of the same protestors would be up in arms to support any kind of legislation that would protect the Great Lawn if it didn't inconvenience them.

On one hand we have a police state and on the other we have responsible citizens that have the need and right to protest. In between, we have low life agitators and infiltrators. Agitators are weak extremist, blind believers of something of some sort of thing that can only take a stand utilizing such protests that have been organized by others. Infiltrators are basically those blended in unnoticeably to activate the willing vandalism spirit of agitators for the obvious.

The agitators are similar to the vast majority of our population. They don’t investigate or educate themselves on the key issues that make them uncomfortable because of incapacity or because even that it’s too hard of a job. The masses, well as long as they can lift up a piece of bread and shove it in their mouth while watching CNN why would there be a need to do anything else. When they have no logic or common senses, why to question the purpose or veracity of the media, right?? Just vote or no vote anything, it doesn’t really matter, we are a democracy and that’s why we are 50/50 splinted a long the way. A lottery game anyhow.

Besides what choices the majority of useless souls have? Decades of indoctrination with ..if you are not an American, you are a communist, ..Its black or white and if you are not with me, you are with the terrorist. With such odds… how could protesters have a chance?? They should have started when things were cooking instead of now that the desert is about to be served.

But don’t despair, whether you are a protester or a sucker taxpayer with no rights to know. You have the first, unique, biggest democracy on earth and part of the universe, you have a nation, your own nation and about all..you have your flag. Free identity in return for your tax payments and blind eye.

I'm not sure what that has to do with telling protestors to protest somewhere that would not cost the already strined budget of NYC millions of tax dollars.

You could always put out a collecting can for the demonstrators to put into. As long as the money goes into looking after the grass. You could even rope an environmental group into holding the cans, they can talk about respecting and looking after the grass. Simple huh?

    Hmmm...

Seems the judge who made the ruling is a democrat appointed by one William Clinton. This fact and others presented here now gives me grounds for a ruling.

Case not proven. All charges dismissed without predjudice.

Maybe there needs to be a wee rider to whatever the park regs are that political demo's get more chance at it than pop concerts.
