The retina contains two types of photoreceptors, rods and cones. The rods are more numerous, some 120 million, and are more sensitive than the cones. However, they are not sensitive to color. The 6 to 7 million cones provide the eye's color sensitivity and they are much more concentrated in the central yellow spot known as the macula. In the center of that region is the " fovea centralis ", a 0.3 mm diameter rod-free area with very thin, densely packed cones.

The experimental evidence suggests that among the cones there are three different types of color reception. Response curves for the three types of cones have been determined. Since the perception of color depends on the firing of these three types of nerve cells, it follows that visible color can be mapped in terms of three numbers called tristimulus values. Color perception has been successfully modeled in terms of tristimulus values and mapped on the CIE chromaticity diagram.

They are insects, there's lots of photos showing insects turning into Rods, you can even see rods in the Mel Gibson movie "we were soldiers"

I used to think they were some kind of unknown creature, but it is most probably nonsense....

What the hell are rods, if someone would care to enlighten a non-native speaker?

    Would this fit the description?

Some people think that they are aliens....

If you are talking aboutthe insect-like RODS that are being studied. I think it's possible that it is real. It's hard to tell.

These link have pictures and attempted explanations fo RODS.

Rods are stupid concepts. Get yourself a camera with a shorter time of light reception and there will be no more rods. I have seen such things myself.

they cant be aliens, the only things that prove this are picture of rods in space, but since they rely on air to propell themselves, the could not poszsibly move in space, plus, if they somehow got into space and drifted by solar winds or something, the time it would take to travel from even mars would be lenger than the lifecycle of any know organism that size, that is assuming they can go into a hybernating state wher they donth need to breathe, and their shells are strong enough not to be ripped apart by the vacuum of space

they are either camera tricks or earth-born insects

Their speed isn't anything compared to another thing they possess: Reflexes, that is, if those theories are to be used. Many say that rods can turn to avoid collision with a wall just in an instant despite their crazy speed.
