All I have to say is:

Imagine all the 13-19 year olds in chat rooms..when given this information...how much they are going to mess with it by hammering the rooms with all sorts of terrorist like chatter.

That is ridiculous. And further if it ends up being worked out and used....even more stupefiying people who get caught and are the real thing.

    Bah.

as if it would even be possable

how long do you think it would take them to work out a "patten" and respond?

    days?
    months?

if i wanted to use it to send a go code or whatever all i would need to do is walk into one of the internet cafes, ect and send it

i mean how many messages would you really need to send?

this is plan we go on 30th?

2-3 chat times at most and they could be we go tonight, using different names and different rooms hence different IP's its compleatly safe

and for those who are looking for the info all they have to do is be passive and talk about how cute willam scott is or whatever and they will never know

    its impossable

When i think of them spying in chat rooms,

There is also a difference between saying and doing, some kids in chat rooms play games to get attention, while the people masterminding attacks send each other greetings, poetry and numbers whatever code the group decided on sharing, elements everyone often sends in a same message.
    Waste of time
People paid for that, in some situations it's ineeded (pedophilia)
But hey, it could get ridiculous to the point where the FBI have many suspected terrorists: Muslim, left, liberal, democrate, french, Arabs, chemists, pilots and so on.... in depth inquisition takes a lot of time.
In the Pentagon's case, nearly one third of the planet seems suspected!

i see a gap: I wonder how come the US do not have the time to analyse
100 000 hours of filings, from the first debate transcript:
KERRY: The president just said the FBI had changed its culture. We just read on the front pages of America's papers that there are over 100,000 hours of tapes, unlistened to. On one of those tapes may be the enemy being right the next time.

-Taking records but not having the time to analyse data. imo

I said it before, Proud_Muslim was an agent trolling for potential terrorists...
...if they can infiltrate churches and mosques under the Patriot Act, surely they have the internet under scrutiny.

    Top Mosker, I'm making a citizen's arrest!

Yeah, and America probably reads every letter send to ol' Santa Claus, just in case someone wishes for a nuke for christmas...

Seriously, if this is the case, who cares? Are there any terrorists around? And also, I think I am relatively safe in Germany, but hey, I am just a neo-liberal-left-wing-militant-child-eating-church-burning-satanic-whale-catching-muslim.

    The government relies on informants.

    The article is good...in theory...theory.
With so many different types of chatrooms...there is not going to be a common algorithim for them to monitor, not to mention a lot of chatrooms are on privately owned servers that do not have to comply with anything. This means that they would have to have a sentient program that would logon to several different types of chatrooms with several different types of authentication...get past any hosts or operators that routinely look for clones and bots and then sit quietly and collect info.

In a lot of rooms if you sit there for too long without participating they kick you out and sometimes ban you...takes up band to sit there and lurk all day.

Plus, like people have brought up...how many people are really going to sit there and talk about a terrorist act and have like...I dunno...weekly project management sessions for it ? DUH

All I see is a way some guy or some company can get a grant from the government to develop a theory of an algorithm or the theory of a program and get paid for the research without actually coming up with a product.

What the FBI does to try to catch the pedophiles that prey on the net works, however, there aren't enough agents in the right places to get them. WIth all the networks that show up on the net daily it is almost impossible to keep up with it and to expect the manpower to be that great is silly.

In my opinion it would be harder to catch terrorists that are serious on the net because they are first off trained to be subversive...duh..and second off... the best peeps for the job are those off the grid.

Yes. I work with the government trying to catch people, I understand that. My comment meant that if that is all they are relying on for a comp program to recognize, it would go nuts if it worked because of all the kids fucking with it....and they would.

    I was being facetious.

The only thing you could do is burn a flag. You are not in the position to give away national secrets, or bomb buildings. There are no spooks here. The whole idea is faulty at best.

These are not the users you are looking for *Waves Hand*

We can go about our business *Waves Hand*

    Move along *Waves Hand*

The FBI/CIA/OSS whatever, have and prob will continue to lurk on forums and
chat rooms, if you look into the origins of 1337 speak or read up on early
hackers (the real ones, not script kiddies) you'll find plenty of references to
'spooks' lurking on BBS, it may be paranoia but in some cases it brought about
the arrest of several capable but naive hackers.
