http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6676586/ "Kiesling says in the fall edition of American Speech that the word derives its power from something he calls cool solidarity — an effortless kinship that’s not too intimate. Cool solidarity is especially important to young men who are under social pressure to be close with other young men, but not enough to be suspected as gay." Well... at least now we know what it means.... Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! Do we all use the word? Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
Is this news? I use it all the time in casual conversation (with close friends) or new aquaintences. Hardly ever with strangers or people I don't like. In North America, I guess we do this in the same vain as Europeans who like to crowd your face; Its to remove the natural barrier and let them know that you trust/respect them. I wouldn't go far enough to attribute it to 'pressure'. Its just the parlance.
Hi I am actually a student of Scott's. Well, I lied, I haven't had him yet. But our department is really small and I know most of the professors. HAIL TO PITT They really should have picked some of his other research to publish. I use it with different groups of friends in varying degrees and in different styles of u sage. It just depends on where I'm at.
