It relates back to population growth models. r is the per-capita rate of population growth and K is the carrying capacity of the environment at the equilibrium level of the population. I think the original concept of r and K strategies is attributed to the book "The Theory of Island Biogeography"
there would also be R-type animals and K-type animals - R type, frequent copulation w/ many offspring without care K type, few offspring that are cared for
