This is quite simply the most remarkable item I have read in two decades or more. I am astounded. Thank you for drawing it to our attention. I have to echo your 'Wow', and encourage everyone to read it.

i only heard the term 'global dimming' the other day and had meant to look it up ..so thanks for saving me the trouble

in the UK it can be very dimm...cloudcover most of the year actually. i am sure i read in the article global dimming isn't related to global warming?,,,well, in our case i am not so sure. we were warned that it would get wetter...in winter and summer which is has. which means more cloud cover plus more dimming....but probably this dot explian the more blue sky countries

Where are the peer-reviewed papers on this subject?

Pop-sci journalism should not be taken seriously.

*Avatar wonders what the peer reviewed journals wrote at Darwin's time(?)
If you read only peer reviewed then most likely you'll know there's global warming (not obligatory human caused) only when it's Sahara next door (to the peer reviewer of course). Try reviewing yourself.

Don't worry yourselves. This is the first time I've heard of "Global Dimming" and I doubt this study has any credence. I skimmed the articles and from what I've found, the scientific methods used to detect global dimming are about as accurate and coherent as my own were when I was 4 years old.

The majority of the material spreading over the internet about this seems to use emotional writing tactics to lure the reader into thinking with their heart rather than their head.

I'm still searching, and as of yet, I have not come across one scientific argument that can spark my belief. If anyone can find some documented scientific proof, please provide a link. I am highly interested.

well im inclined to agree from the start...its bloody obvious the world is becoming dimmer...for a start the axles are shifting...the tons of shit that it is pumped in the atmosphere everyday...then uv rays heat the carbon dioxide...trapping it in low base atmospheric conditions...which then leads to vabour being withdrawn from all the oceans...which turns into clouds...and lots of the bastards!...which in turns block the sunlight...and then hot and cold air mixes...causes it to rain cats and dogs.

there you have it....man made shit...until all the fossil fuel.gas/oils has gone...we can all happily revert back to the dark ages...atleast the air was cleaner then!

It was only recently, when his conclusions were confirmed by Australian scientists using a completely different method to estimate solar radiation, that climate scientists at last woke up to the reality of global dimming.

I guess pop article scientists are doing all the research. Scepticism is perfectly normal but we really should read the article.

You must not be familiar with the peer review process.

A quick search reveals there is little more than alarmist articles in pop-sci mags and newspapers, and of course a plethora of conspiracy sites.

    No peer-reviewed papers are available.

The deal with global dimming is that while the Earth receives the same amount of sunlight now as it did several decades ago, less of it reaches the ground now than then. That solar radiation though still contributes to the Earth's energy budget. It's just that more of it is absorbed at higher elevations.

So.... another "blame it to global warming" again? Either way, whoa...

On a science show last week (Horizon) they talked about global dimming, if i heard it right, global dimming and global warming are canceling each other out.

Well, i'm sure they said some major surveys costing 25 million pounds did research into this, and they confirmed that global dimming is real!

Oh my! Whatever makes one think that the BBC isn't BIASED?

BTW, anybody know anything about solar sunspot cycles? Think twice before jumping on pop-sci bandwagons. Falling off can be uncomfortable.

Oh! That reminds me. The sky is falling!

That link is surely a joke?

Well, that last entry about the BBC's coverage of Robert Jackson is ridiculous, in fact i would go as far as to say it is deep in "conspiracy theory" territory.

    Totally noncence!

The BBC link I posted is much less a joke than that Guardian rag, Star_One. To say the Guardian is accurate in its reporting is akin to saying that you read Playboy for the articles!

The Guardian is an insult to the human race.(and so is pretty much every other "newspaper")

*EDIT* i think though that article about global dimming is pretty much correct.
