    My verdict:

Brilliant! Absolutely wonderful. I was feeling chills of wellbeing and excitement all through it. Finally a fantasy that feels real

In your pocket? A copy you mean?
Man, you´re missing out on something if you don´t treat yourself to seeing it on the big screen first.
I´ll get the dvd as soon as it´s out.
Great movies deserve the best presentation

    Having seen the Movie.....

I have read the book on more than a few occasions and was dubious to say the least with the prospect of a film of the book or would it be a Hollywood film of the book?

I was pleasantly surprised with the film; although I found myself on more than one occasion saying, that does not happen in the book! The person playing Frodo was the one big downer - he really put me off the film as a "collectors item". How anyone can be that smarmy and be alive is beyond me. However, the effects are outstanding. How to make normal sized people look miniscule was brilliantly done. Gimli the dwarf is actually played by John Rhys Davies (Indiana Jones etc) who is in fact enormous!! The effects are worth it alone, but the story was, in the main, adhered to. That spider, crawling down Sams coat, underneath the wraith did not happen; Arwen did not summon the waters of the river to wash away the wraiths; and a few others too. I look forward to Episode 2; out later this year but I wish Frodo could keep that damn ring on and become invisible!!

When we think about the length and breadth of such a three-part epic, and that the whole of it is being made into movies, then I think most are willing to consider how difficult it is to condense just the first part of such a tale into a three hour segment. Inevitable I suppose that there would have to be some rearranging done, i.e., Arwen at the river. (Not to mention the misleadingly brutal falling-out between Saruman the White and Gandalf the Grey at the Tower of Orthanc in Isengard.) True, these things didn’t happen that way, but they worked well enough. (And the white horses at the forefront of that floodwall were quite impressive regardless of who conjured them. Wow...does anyone speak the Elven tongue as well as Liv Tyler?

As for Frodo... Well, everyone’s entitled to their own opinion, naturally. Yet the “smarmy-ness” you perceive, Red Devil, might be seen as “innocence” by others. In the stories the hobbits were portrayed as a child-like race, yet a few like Bilbo and his nephew Frodo were exceptional. And like the British people from whom Tolkien drew much of his inspiration, Frodo and other hobbits tended to put on a good face, kept their chins up, or made light of things when the truth was darker than any wished to deal with. They were an exceedingly sentimental bunch at times, too. The Frodo in the movie didn’t exactly match the Frodo I’ve held in my imagination for all of these years either, but I think it’s understood (by authors and movie-makers alike) that different interpretations are going to develop.

That said, the movie WAS a pleasant surprise, wasn’t it? They got so many details right, they’ve made me look forward to seeing how well they pull off the next two. Nothing will take the place of the books themselves, but all things considered, I was very pleased.

All three films have already been made and in the can; they filmed them back to back. OK I agree ref Hobbits; but it is just that Frodo was more unhobbit like than the other hobbits. Regarding the white horses in the water, I believe that is actually mentioned in the book. The "war" between Gandalf and Suraman was almost as I depicted it complete with the Lord of the Eagles coming to rescue him, but not, as in the film, by the hands of a moth!! Nevertheless, an excellent film.

R.D. I believe you've misread or misinterpreted some of my post. As for the falling-out between Saruman and Gandalf, yes, it happened in the book and in the movie, but the movie depicts the event as being more brutal than does the book. True, the moth was added in the movie. True, the white horses are in the book and movie. True, they've already made the other films. Again, I think you've misconstrued what I wrote.

No biggie about differing opinions on Frodo, not to me anyway. I offered what might explain why some Tolkien readers perceive the movie Frodo one way or another.

My point is... that regardless of some reader's preferences, the movie is still great in many folks' opinion. We seemed to be agreeing on this.

I have seen 'Lord of the Rings' seven times now and I would like to see it at least once more before it finishes here. Then I won't be able to wait until the DVD comes out (with the extra footage).

Every time I see the movie I notice something new. I went a couple of days ago and for the first time notice the stone trolls in the woods just before Arwen arrives.

The movie is breathtaking especially the New Zealand scenery.

So much attention was paid to detail throughout the film.

I have never enjoyed a movie as much as I enjoyed 'Lord of the Rings"
