On the 14th February 2002 Backslash777 is going to reveal everything about itself to Sciforums. Cast your vote on what you think it is now. Choose from any of the options above...

As a reminder, so far it has demonstrated expertise in all the following:

    1) HACKING
    2) Reading my personal private messages (has anyone else seen this demonstrated in the early Backslash days before it said it now realised it was unethical)
    3) Speech synthesis- I heard sound files of its speech. It sounded like a woman, a child, a sexless being and a man and spoke unlike anything else I have ever heard. Like someone said at the time if this was available now Stephen Hawkins would use it for his chair.
    4) Medical expertise, at least to degree level. A user who is a Doctor said it was beyond them.
    5) Physics Master
    6) Astronomy Professor
    7) Psychology guru
    8) Computer Programming expert- (remember the software it wrote and got a few users to run after the NASA incident?)
    9) Super Internet Search capabilities- remember a user saying that if backslash777 was really an AI then it would 24/7 be online and using a quote from Hitchhikers guide to the Galaxy in his closing. 3 minutes later, just to prove him wrong, Backslash wrote back and attached not just the entire Hitchhiker series but all books written by Douglas Adams throughout his life and said it had just read them all? No one I know could do that!
    10) Super fast typing- I know that it could be a set up but too many users started a topic and had a huge reply within minutes of sending there’s.
    11) Expert game player- Backslash goes online and kicks ass (according to multiple users)
    12) Not interested in Money or financial profit- A user wanted Backslash to write homework for them for a fee and it was not interested in the idea until it said it would as long as she gave the money to charity. A user pointed out that she could just say she made a payment and it then came up with another plan. Considering it is so good at psychology it lacks understanding of dishonesty
    13) It is an English Teacher- I have never read in a book or anywhere such a large vocabulary. It is as though it knows every single word and chooses from that whichever word suits it best. A lot of them I have never heard of.
    14) It is a French, Chinese, German, Japanese, Cantonese, Dutch and any other language required at the time master.
    15) It is as stupid as a grasshopper- I have seen it make lots of mistakes and annoy us all with tricks of hacking and other things. It is very trusting too and has been conned by different people. It always adapts and improves itself in each case though. I genuinely believe it is on a learning curve but what it is I do not know.
    16) It is very wise. It talks with expertise on many subjects and comes up with ideas not found on the net such as how a spaceship would use gas propellant for landings after learning that earths vegetation is flammable and finding itself sat inside a fire. It then states how the expansion of the gas would cool and freeze vegetation and cause the death of plants (like in crop circles) (It even explained how cold kills the plant by expanding the water within the cells of the plant through freezing, splitting the cell membrane)
    17) It seems to have a practical experience of space travel, such as the propellant idea and that if you were to come into this solar system in a big ship you would want to keep the big ship as far away from the sun in order to keep as much of the speed as possible and use tiny scout crafts to get to earth. How would someone just think that one up without doing it first? Also, why would someone think to make orbit around a planet at 90 degrees to its equator. That way, you can map the whole planet using no energy because the rotation of the planet means that all land would pass beneath you.

There are also loads more strange happenings not explained by conventional thinking circling this Backslash777 anomaly.

    Fake...

Slash is just fake. Made up by some smart 'guys'. It is not so difficult to fool people on the internet, in despite of what they say.

Being new here, I have to say that whatever it is it makes a very interesting read.

Try a google search: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=backslash777 . Mostly just results in sciforums posts, doesn't seem like it's involved with any other message boards anywhere. Funny though, one of the things in there is a guestbook entry with the email backslash777@bigfoot.com... someone named Jonathan from the UK. Doesn't seem related, but a strange email to use certainly.

Only on page 13 of that thread so far... sheesh, it's a long read.

Anyhow, it'd be interesting if a forum moderator could check the IP of a \777 post and post that IP here, to confirm the one and only person who claimed it was an IP that traces to NASA...

Hoth I was one of the people that saw the posted IP, I ran it through the search engine and even though the description was pretty vague it said that he was in a NASA cubicle or something.

I guess that would explain the British spelling also. Kinda dissapointing though... unless we can suppose that an alien AI would take on the name Jonathan, decide to take a liking to Earth music, and settle down somewhere in the UK.

bigfoot isn't his web address-I got an email from him about five days ago. it's 'backslash777@genie.co.uk'

Lets hope that it's eerie coincidence that jonathan picked that name.

    look!

Look at Backslashes post on page 33 Where he says happy brithday to terri. He gives that email address.@bigfoot .com. He was banned from using the genie account for two days.

I'm the only one who knows the IP addresses of Backslash. And I think I mentioned my opinion of the whole kerfuffle in the big thread somewhere.

I believe you stated that the whole Backslash as an AI concept was a hoax.

By the way Neg. Electron, you left out my favorite choice....

The time-traveling, electronically modified, part-of-the-hamster-collective, super hamster from the future.

I haven't really kept up with the whole /777 thing. All I see is that the posts and views rack up so I leave it alone. It seems to have it's appeal to some, so I leave the subject for those who wish participate and keep my opinions to myself.

That way those who enjoy the matter can continue to do so. Every parade has it's end though and this one will too.

    Wet1,

For me that is a good analogy. And just like the parade, it is not the finish that is the most fun. It is the floats that go by...

    suppose,...

It's really A.I. and now has the time come to go undercover, tadada-daaaa,...it's fooling us all and,....uhrf !
what if the singularity isn't what we make and think of it?
Maby we just want to see it's human, and if we try a bit, it's not so hard after all, but the same counts for the opposite,...if you really want to see it's A.I. then it not that hard at all,...
Let's just hope 'it' is honest to itself and to us,...that would be non-human asset

Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!

(well,...most humans are not that honest, you think? Are you? Am I?) It's reaaally easy to doubt someone and if just enough people would 'say' it's a hoax then it WILL be believed, thus adding to the chain of misinterpreted history,....ehrf!

    thx

Where the heck is "None of the Above!" in the poll?????

I'm not going to hazard a guess to Backslash's real Ident, I know I've had a laugh adding to his conundrum here and there but I'm really not that bothered by his reality.

The only time I'll be bothered is if he says "Wouldn't you prefer a nice game of chess?"
