Windows Vista

Most of your probably have heard of the new official name for Longhorn.
The amusing thing to me (and presumably all latvians) is that "vista" in Latvian means "chicken".
Well, Latvia is a small scale operation and I don't think that M$ will change name just because of us, but I bet their managers in this country will have a hard time promoting their product with a straight face.

Windows Chicken is a very uncool name for home users, corporations and government institutions alike.

I prefer Windows Chicken for some reason. I already have a beta version of Longhorn (it takes up a lot of system resources) but it seems to be interesting. It's impossible to tell how it will be until the official release. Most of my programs that I already own will likely not be compatible but I'm ready for my 64-bit CPU to be utilized.

 

So they can bring out a 128-bit, 256-bit, 512-bit, 768-bit architecture.

It's like they use to say something along the lines of, "The current trend of Technology suggests that anything produced wholesale is out of date as soon as the prototype testing has been given the go-ahead."

As soon as you have your 64-bit OS, the architecture will change envoking more people to buy a different system and yet again work on yet another OS. (or YAOS for short, perhaps they should call it that.)

 

You know, I was really looking forward to longhorn.

They promised monad (a shell) and WinFS. Instead, we get a bloated OS with better search functionality. Whoopdeedoo!

Thankfully it doesn't bother me at all, wasn't planning on using it anyway.
For now I can get by by VMwaring Win2000Pro (the best Windows imho) for some essential tasks that can only be done on Windows (because I don't have the money to buy a Mac), i.e., I need to use some Win/Mac only software.

 

I want to buy a MAC, but I already have a WIndows machine and two Linux machines... Maybe I can get it when I finally get my degree and a decent job. I find that the price/performance ratio isn't good enough for me to buy one. I just built a nice rig for $2000 Canadian and it wouldn't even cover the cost of a G5 computer. Anyway, I love the Chicken thing, I rarely laugh at something I see online, but that did it for me.

I love Windows 2000 server, I put it on the server at work and it is reliable.

 

I'm sure I read somewhere someone Praising the new ability of Install a MAC OS on an IBM PC. The reason they praised it... well the cost of course.

I'll have to have more of a look about (Although if anyone wants to point out a source before I have a chance, by all means do.)

 

i love bloatware. i get sexual pleasure from watchng CPU utilization go above 3% on my box. makes me feel so much better about wasting money on sexy hardware.

If I have to purchase another OS within 5 more years, I won't do it for they make enough money and my OS is perfect for all that I need to do. I just purchased my WinXP last year and I kept my WIN 98 SE for over 5 years before getting rid of it. I really don't need that much more speed or capabilities to run 5 programs at once. I really don't know of many people that do.

 

Speed? Are you kidding? Windows Vista will be a resource hog and do nothing much more than look slightly better. All the cool features are postponed, even WinFS.

I use Linux Mandriva and I think it's an almost perfect OS, much more superior to Windows.
Of course there is that there isn't enough software at this time, but that's the fault of software developers.

I want to get a Mac, but have no money. Besides now that they have switched to x86, it's a sane choice to wait it out.

 

Who needs to "purchase" any software

I use 64-bit Fedora and Windows XP Professional on my desktop right now. I'm looking at installing Mac OS X as well (just with the three options of OSes upon startup).


Speaking of Windows Vista, what are your predictions? Do you think it will be stable? Will it really hog too many system resources? Is there anthing new or cool that you look forward to?

I have not really read a lot of the commentary about the beta builds, I want to wait until the OS is in action in the "real" world before I consider acquiring it and using it as a primary OS. I heard that most programs designed for Windows XP will not be compatible with Vista, is this true?

 

I think that (and that is only my subjective oppinion) Windows Vista will be for WinXP like Windows ME was for Win98 Se

 

I think if you are right, Avatar, in 1-2 years 'Mactel' will be for the Mac revolution what the iMac was for the Mac comeback...

I can't see people sticking with MS if vista truly is this bad.

 

give it a break guys. first things first, Windows Vista is still Beta 1. they are still in testing phase and we dont know yet what final product will look like. O.K. Win FS not being included was a big disappointment, but it will be shipped as a separate update. but this system will be drastically different from the XP one. I believe they are going in different direction, by taking security to UNIX level (thats what the plan is for release in 2006). But this will be an option for user (as privacy thing i believe), so users wont have to worry about security anymore. Plus avalon is in testing phases, people write reviews,they review the review (

) and then they utilize those opinions to get to the development and try and improve it.
I'd like to agree that Mac O.S. X has a great look to it, plus it has efficiency, but i would not place my bets off Microsoft as yet. People talk....Microsoft has 50 billion $ in cash, thats a whole lot of money, they can buy any company any day and lets not forget, Microsoft has a lot of stake in Apple Inc. too, so lets not get excited about down fall and stuff. Microsoft is what IBM was couple of decades back, and naturally people;geeks;techno wizards, electronic anarchists would want that to change...But Microsoft still has some time before the final release so i think i would wait untill the product is released. Plus you have to consider the excitement this delay has generated. Its a hell lot more than any other release, may be thats the trick that msft has up its sleeve. I am not sure right now though....

Some people also mention Mozilla Firefox as a replacement to IE, well what happens if Mozilla is bought by Msft? it is possible... eheheh...then what happens...for now IE 7.0 is working fine with me. I have been testing it,Tabs are ok...so...

 

If Mozilla foundation is bought by MS (in case they are willing to sell themselves) nothing really changes, it's still open source and anyone will be able to work on from there,
besides nothing can make the developers to remain if they don't want to.

As for Avalon, Linux is already there.

And as for Unix security.. yeah, right.. I'll believe it when I see it.

Now I run a vastly superior OS than Windows and see no reasons (vapour ware or not) why Windows Chicken could make me buy it.

It has been in beta for what 2 years now? And I'm not talking about the MS announcement.

Linux is O.K. but please check Mac OS X out!! it I-S- the freaking deal. if Mac OS X sells independently from Macs and becomes compatible (i am seeing such a future a near possibility) then Windows Vista is history....

No question of belief. We will see it and use it.

Its a huge jump from XP, things become comlicated and take time to work on to.
