Makes you wonder doesn't it? It certainly makes me wonder about all high profile research. I have seen too many times myself that data not fitting 'a paper' be shuffled underneath the carpet.

Can scientists today still withstand the pressure of the need to apply for funding which is based more and more on high profile articles and media attention?

Faking data is so easy. It's so tempting. Can we resist this temptation? Is society to blame by asking the impossible from scientists? To do good and reliable science and not give them security of funding?

Everyone is a liar. Everyone. Scientists, politicians, policemen, anyone in authority. They are all liars. They could not be authorities unless they were liars.

There is something else behind this story. It was an Israeli guy who was the first one to spill the beans about this. I have to wonder if it was a disgruntled colleague, or if they are trying to sabotage South Korean scientific progress.

With this man discredited, someone else can do most of the same research and get the credit. And the money that goes with the credit.

Back in the old days, scientists/or whatever we called 'em then, didn't do their work for the glory of it or for federal funding ....they did because they want to do it. Now-a-days, we've created a "class" of scientists, and the only way they can justify being in that "class", to themselves or to others, is to "discover" something. When they can't, they're just one of many, a little fish in a big pond ...and they don't seem to like that, so they lie to try to be a big fish!

what year was that again? Surely that's thus the myth of the 'good old days' and the basic verses applied science idea?

That should teach them to put their name on an important paper just to have another publication on their resume. Of course they are all going to take this paper of their CV now and that is a shame. It should always remain there to show the world what kind of spineless opportunist scientists they really are.
