Since this mom knew they had had sex (which was illegal) and did nothing til the daughter was pregnant shouldn't she be brought up on charges as well?
A 20-year-old Glenbeulah man made an initial court appearance Monday for allegedly impregnating a 16-year-old girl whose mother walked in on the two having sex.
Craig M. Mooney is charged with misdemeanor sexual intercourse with a child, according to a criminal complaint filed Friday. The charge carries a maximum penalty of nine months in jail.
According to the complaint:
The girl's mother caught the two having sex in June, but she didn't report the offense until discovering later that the girl was four months pregnant.
The mother said she had seen Mooney and her daughter watching TV at her Cascade home one day, then went to her daughter's bedroom to check when the two were no longer there. Mooney left quickly but later returned to apologize and ask the mother not to contact police.
In a later interview with a detective, Mooney admitted having sex with the girl at least four times.

In this case, it's not a matter of principle, but law.

It depends on the specific nature of the applicable statute, but if the scant situational information we have in the article is accurate, it would appear the answer is yes, she should.

Well, then you would ....
Never mind.
Anyway, I forget her name, but there was this comedian (large-framed black woman with an awful haircut) who once did this great joke about her two daughters, Hellfire and Damnation. "So one day my eldest daughter, Hellfire, comes to me and says, 'Mom, they told me at school that if you ever lay a hand on me, I can dial 911 and they will take you to jail.' I looked her right in the eye and said, 'Bitch, you gotta make it to the phone.'"

so if parents lear that their kid is being beaten up by a bully every day at school, and fail to report the assault to the police, I assume that would also be aiding and abetting, right? In fact those parents are WORSE, because the kid does not want to get beaten up, whereas I am guessing their daughter consented to the sex.
Once we solve all the rapes murders and robberies, THEN we can move on to crap like "failing to report that your daughter's boyfriend is 4 years older than her." In most states AFAIK, 16 years old is legal, and anyone within 3 years of her age is excepted from the law. There are good reasons for statutory rape laws when older men are seducing young women, but no good policy reason I can think of to prevent each and every 20 year old from dating any 16 year old, no matter what the circumstances.
By all means, let's brand both him and her mother as sex offenders for the rest of their lives.

seems fair to me that if the guy is charged, so should the parent.

Doesn't sound like a matter for the police in my opinion. Sounds like the sex was consensual between her daughter and the guy.
Charge the mother??? It's not like she was in the back cheering them on...or pushing her daughter and him to have sex. If they start charging parents because their kids are out having sex, when they shouldn't there are going to be ALOT of parents in jail.
What is the point of sending the mother and the guy to jail, while the 16 yr old tries to go through a pregnancy herself?
I am not saying that this is a great mother for letting her 16yr old daughter hang around with an older man, knowing what was probably going to happen....but JAIL...Criminal Record...come on.

What is the legal age of consent in America? Different state by state?

Yes, it varies by State. In most States, the age of consent is 16. In a few it's 18 and in a handful you see something else, like 15 or 17. In some cases, where the parents consent to a marriage, the age of consent between the young spouses can be as low as 14 (if the partner is within 3 or 4 years of age).

I think arresting the man is retarded, but fair is fair. If the daughter is legally underage, then the mother ignored it. What if her daughter had been 13 and was willing an d the Mom ignored it?
