Should we be concerned about deforestation? Or on the other hand, is it ok to say "who gives a shit? there are plenty of sources of oxygen. Give me an axe." Any thoughts on this?

I personally think you should make large rainforest preserves and then drop in robotic hunting drones that will kill any human attempting to enter. (or perhaps any human with any mechanical equipment)

Sounds good clockwood.
There are many nature preserves with armed guards ready to shoot poachers or loggers, thats a step in the right direction, I wouldn't mind that job actually, now THATS something I'm willing to fight for.

I think(and this is very generous IMO) that areas already populated by humans should be fenced, if the town or city wants to expand they would be forced to do it vertically(skyscrapers) as opposed to horizontally.
If people need trees for wood they could grow them in the skyscrapers, if they want fish they could farm them in the skyscrapers, this technology is already around.

To the first post, I don't want to save the rainforest to save oxygen, that is beside the point, to me that is like saying I'm not going to burn down my neighbours house because I might want to get sugar off them one day.

most oxygen comes from algae and such. the rainforest is crucial because of the wealth of species and their delicate balance that if thrown off could wreck havoc on earth's ecospheres. but hey that's not very important.

Certainly maintaining the rainforests should be a high priority, as they hold an appreciable fraction of the world's biodiversity.

However, as swedishfish says, the rainforests are not important to the world's oxygen balance; in fact taking into account all the detritivores and other organisms in the forest floor the rainforest consumes just about as much oxygen as it produces.

Don't get too worried about the biosphere's effect on the oxygen level of the atmosphere; there is plenty of oxygen in the atmosphere, which was mostly created by plants long ago fossilised;
if you have to worry about anthropogenic modification to the atmosphere, concentrate on carbon dioxide; this can be removed by oceanic algae, and to a lesser extent by land plant growth; but the level of oxygen will hardly change at all.
