but like spider pointed out, we've just witnessed and or recorded a small part. our lives are hanging in such a delicate balance, and there are natural forces out there that are so strong. it just doesn't seem far-fetched to me at all.

i guess because i believe that we will enter a new age after this one, that i believe there have been ages before this one as well. you know i've had experiences that were pretty biblically and apocalyptically oriented. the bible doesn't paint a very pretty picture of the end of this age, so i don't assume that hasn't happened before, at the end of a previous age.

i'm not religious and i think that all of those things listed are hideous displays of what is wrong with humanity.

i don't necessarily think i will survive. i don't like what's wrong with me any more than i like what's wrong with everybody else. but i think that we're spiritual beings with eternal lives, and that we'll be reborn again.

Recorded history is only a tiny fraction of the time modern humans have lived on Earth.

this is hearsay, but someone told me it's been theorized that the mayans were the remnant of an advanced society displaced by a catastrophic event. what if a handful of us had to start over from scratch after our society had been decimated? our learning curve would take quite a hit. in more ways than one.

    Someone told you?

Whatever "theories" there are about it are specious and more than a little composed of nonsensical misinterpretations of evidence.
You're going by second-hand accounts of crackpot writings now?

a theory is a theory. it's not the truth, but it's not entirely worthless either. it's a mental exercise.

    Wrong again.
One: it wasn't a "theory" (there's a specific meaning to that word).
And two: yes it was entirely worthless.
There was nothing but misinterpretation (sometimes deliberate) of evidence and gaps filled in with pure speculation.
It was an exercise in delusion and self-aggrandisement.

    Lori,

And the bible is wrong on so many levels and so many ways, why would anyone consider it to be correct about how it ends, and furthermore, isn't any ending bad ?

you don't know that. you're theorizing right now! there's nothing wrong with logical speculation, as long as you don't misinterpret it as the truth.

only an evil person would say that. i don't need a voice to tell me. your voice makes it quite clear.

and by the way, a voice like yours doesn't help anybody.

    I know it's not a theory.
And I know that the evidence was misinterpreted. By mistake AND wilfully.

Nope, you're assuming I don't have any actual knowledge of the topic under discussion. You're wrong.

The speculation wasn't logical and it DID misinterpret the truth.

Where does any group of people come from?
I'm saying I know about the rampant speculation about their "descent" from an "advanced civilisation".
It's one more UFO/ Atlantis story touted as archaeological research.
