    An American Moment

Comedian Noel Casler↱ remarks, "Liz took McCarthy on one of those famous Cheney family quail hunts."

Meanwhile, stopped-clock bipartisanship occurs in the same political story, as the one and only Jonah Goldberg↱ observes, "I think there would be no more fitting end to Kevin McCarthy’s dream of becoming speaker than the 'scandal' of him being exposed as privately believing the right and moral thing", a point that even liberal TV host Joy Reid↱ cannot help but agree with.

Remember, it was about five years ago that the Beltway was abuzz about an audio recording of House minority leader Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA23), then House majority leader, suggesting that Donald Trump was on Vladimir Putin's payroll.

Try to imagine or account for everything it takes for this particular American moment to occur. Just trying to enumerate the heap of unimaginable stupidity is nearly futile; truth might be stranger than fiction, but that cannot in itself be the calculation—wagering on that sort of strangeness actually constrains it toward believability. This is the sort of thing that only occurs because some people are unable to avoid it. Perhaps that sounds like individually stylized fundamental human corruption, but it more reflects on the coincidence of a particular range of ethos coinciding with both opportunity and context of circumstance. The range of people who would make certain decisions leading to iterations of this outcome is larger than Mr. McCarthy alone, but still, the man's coincidence with such infamous recorded failures to do the right thing will become the stuff of legend.
