It seems to me that alot of people have some very strange views on this subject. I'm not going to say which side I'm on just yet.
I would like to to see peolples opinions on this, though.

Are people objects or not? Please give the reasoning behind your answer.
    Thanks

I am trying to answer with out answering. (like zen posting or something)

As far as I'm concerned there is only one answer to this question and it would depend entirely on what your view of an object is.

Maybe the question to ask is what do you consider an object, and does a person fit into that definition?

An "object" is any noun. So yeah, a person is an object.

Yes, it would be, if it existed.

And please don't tell us you're going to open up the old "do we really exist???????" can of worms.

    Here's the deal.
So many peopole, both here at sciforums and in the outside world seem to have a problem with the phrase 'people are objects'. They seem to think a person, being, entity, or consciousness are, for some reason, beyond the realm of being classified as objects.

Alot of people are under the impression that object means inanimate. I've even heard one person even go so far as to say that an object is a "thing that doesn't move" because inanimate 'obviously' means not moving.

I guess what this really is, is me wondering how many people out there believe that people cannot be concidered objects, and how they can come to such a conclusion.

A person is a person. Objects are a state of mind. It is natural for the human mind to make objects out of people and everything else it encounters. It helps us survive.

    Of Course They Are...

Neil Young put it quainlty in the song Sample and Hold
    "Chemical Computer.... Thinking Battery..."
    heh!
Nonetheless, naturally in the physical sense we are objects...
I mean, a human body is subject to the same laws of physics & all as any other physical object.

It's difficult not to stray into philosophical/metaphorical kookdom, though...

Because what most would consider that which makes a human individual more than merely an agglomeration of chemicals percolating along to produce a bit of electricity is precisely that which - it is presumed - makes us so different from all those other objects.... "mind" 'consciousness" "spirit" "soul" "anima" "chi"...
whatever label one chooses for it.

Could one not consider life all the more profound, precious, and incomparable simply because it is somehow bound up in the mysterious functioning of a "mere" physical object, which must by virtue of its nature "run down" and "die", ending one's time in the Universe forever?

Sorry! Waxed way into metamumbojumbo, there!
