Today there was another seeming ambush of cops in Baton Rouge. Three dead and three others shot are the reports so far. The attack in Dallas was heartbreaking as well. Obviously we are all saddened by the deaths of these innocent victims of violent crimes directed at police. However, I am hearing highly misrepresentative arguments about the dangers faced by the police. What struck me first was when I learned that it doesn't rate as one of the most dangerous jobs. On this list it ranks 15th, after Logging, fishing, roofers, recycling work, farmers, taxi drivers, iron workers, construction workers, power line workers, general maintenance work... http://time.com/4326676/dangerous-jobs-america/ But even more striking is this. Consider the State of California which has a mortality rate of 4.4 per 100,000 officers, but a death rate due to homocide of 6.7 per 100,000 for the average population. So based on this, it is more dangerous to not be a cop than it is to be a cop, in California. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crime_in_California http://www.governing.com/gov-data/law-enforcement-fatality-rates-by-state.html
