When I go t the store and there is a fruit or veggie we haven't tried, I buy it. Last week I bought a triangular shaped banana. It was green and slow to turn yellow. It was milder in flavour that the standard Cavandish banana usually bought at the store. It was also a LOT larger than the average banana. I want to buy more, but they don't have them. They also don't remember what they were called. Anyways, I've googled and wiki'd to no avail. Anyone ever eaten a triangular shaped banana? Do you know what it is called?
Look here: http://www.worldwideplants.com/bananas.htm Apparently there is a huge number of cultivars.. Check out the French Horn and the African Rhinohorn.
that reminds me of seeing three ladies buying cucumbers in store, the first one says give me the long narrow one, second one wanted a short but thick one,and the third one said give me whatever is left over I just want to make a salad. Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
I was thinking it looked most like the rhino horn, but that's not it. I wish some of the others had pics of the fruit instead of the plant. Thanks anyways, you did a much better job at finding them than I did.
I like bananas. There are a lot of people from somalia at my school. They eat bananas with every meal.
You welcome. I scanned the captions for the word triangular and searched google for triangular bananas, both in English and Dutch, but came up with nothing. Also found a number of other banana cultivar sites but that didn't help either. They did not have any, or clear, pictures and most mentioned the same cultivars as the site I linked you to.
I'll try that one. However, are you absolutely sure they were not just a bit differently formed ? I sometimes come across regular banana's that are somewhat triangular shaped.
Btw.. searching for banana pictures is NOT worksafe ! Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
The whole bunch of them were like that, as well as all the others there. They were also large around, maybe the size of a beer bottle.
hmmm, I did find this: Why is a banana 3 sided in the skin but cylindrical unpeeled? The skin forms in that configuration to allow for the greatest strength needed to maintain stability on the stem while it ripens. If the skin assumed the same shape as the flesh there would be much greater exposure to the elements, which in turn increases it's risk of infestations, wind damage etc.
Yea, they are all three sides as far as I know, but I thought yours just may have had an exaggerated triangular shape. Maybe it's one of those new 'improved' banana cultivars. Flat banana or flat-sided banana yielded no results by the way.
