Bah. People would be wanting his head on a pike no matter what he did after he was elected. It was one of those situations where there was no way to win and I don't think Gore or whoever would have done one inch better. Bush is definitely in a position where spin can't help but I don't think that could have been avoided. I guess people want a scapegoat on which to blame all their problems and Bush was the easiest target.
